I work in an apple factory. I watch an assembly line of apples go past, and I pick out the bad apples; sometimes I watch myself do this, and sometimes I don't. I do not know which apples are bad and which good, and told my manager the distinction was arbitrary and meaningless. He said No, do your job. So I did.... I think it is ironic -- that I do my job, and also the nature of my job [the picking out of bad apples]. One day my co-worker fell into a piece of heavy machinery and died. He was a bad apple. Apples are nearly spherical and therefore pointless, except the stem. I told another co-worker that apples are pointless, like my life and job. She was a ballerina who, while practicing en pointe, had broken her toes when her sister screamed "piggy back" and jumped on her. "I once danced en pointe," she said. "What's the point," I said. "The toes." I have a foot fetish because of her. If I killed everyone in the factory, I would kill her last, or maybe spare her.
