This occurred at a Slut Walk. For those not familiar with it, the Slut Walk is basically a peaceful protest seeking to eliminate the rape apologism so prevalent in society. The basis is that no woman is ā€œasking for it,ā€ with ā€œitā€ being rape. Itā€™s not a feminist protest; itā€™s a human rights protest.
Many of the protesters, as you can probably imagine, have dealt with sexual harassment or rape in their own lives. Many of them have structured their daily activities to avoid being raped. The gathering is supposed to be a place for them to feel empowered and able to recover in the company of those who understand what theyā€™ve been through or who will not blame them.
Nobody at a Slut Walk will tell a survivor that itā€™s her fault. They will not ask what she was wearing to provoke her attacker. Nobody will say she had too much to drink. Nobody will tell the men in the group that they are inherently rapists themselves, and nobody will tell a male survivor that his experience ā€œwasnā€™t really rape.ā€
Then, this fellow comes along. He sees this gathering of survivors and their supporters, and to him, itā€™s a joke. He sees feminazis. He sees girls who are taking ā€œa bit of funā€ too seriously. And what does he do? He exposes himself to this group of survivors and supporters - some of whom are, in fact, underage.
He sexually harasses literally hundreds of women in one act. Aside from public indecency, there was cruel intent in his actions. He wanted to make them uncomfortable. He wanted to ā€œput them in their place.ā€ Other photos from this event show him flipping the protesters off and laughing at their anger.
And there are still people defending his actions. There are those who still feel like these women wereĀ asking for itand that they deserved to be harassed for trying to claim they werenā€™t. There are those who feel that women should beĀ taught a lesson this way, and they applaud this manā€™s actions.
So no, he didnā€™t pull out his dick in front of feminist protesters. He harassed dozens - if not hundreds - of rape survivors. The reaction to his actions alone outline the purpose of the Slut Walk.
For those of you still doubting whether what he did was wrong (and I do wonder if thereā€™s something wrong with you, if you have doubts), let me give you an analogous situation. Imagine a gathering of black civil rights activists. Imagine Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, and all their colleagues gathered together to demonstrate that being black did not make them lesser people. That being black and living in the South did not mean they were ā€œaskingā€ to be the target of hate crimes.
And at this gathering, a white man decides he should teach them a lesson by pointedly hanging a noose from the nearest tree and laughing at their anger. And other white men, laughing along with him, commend him for taking these activists down a peg.
Thatā€™s what happened here. Itā€™s not an ā€œOMG, I canā€™t believe he did that!ā€ moment. Itā€™s an ā€œOMG, there are people who think this is okayā€ moment. And the fact is, itā€™s not. It never will be. And thatā€™s the take home message of this ridiculous rant Iā€™ve written up.

And this is why we still need feminism.

But they could happen if a filmmaker decides to write those scenes into his or her movie. And, even though we know the movie is fiction, those scenes will live on in our shared cultural conscience as impressions of those real people, thereby corrupting our memory of them built on their real-life actions.Thatā€™s why filmmakers have a responsibility when playing with peopleā€™s perceptions of admired historic people to maintain a basic truth about the content of their character. Quentin Tarantinoā€™s portrayal of Bruce Lee in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does not live up to this standard. Of course, Tarantino has the artistic right to portray Bruce any way he wants. But to do so in such a sloppy and somewhat racist way is a failure both as an artist and as a human being.This controversy has left me torn. Tarantino is one of my favorite filmmakers because he is so bold, uncompromising and unpredictable. Thereā€™s a giddy energy in his movies of someone who loves movies and wants you to love them, too. I attend each Tarantino film as if it were an event, knowing that his distillation of the ā€™60s and ā€™70s action movies will be much more entertaining than a simple homage. Thatā€™s what makes the Bruce Lee scenes so disappointing, not so much on a factual basis, but as a lapse of cultural awareness.Bruce Lee was my friend and teacher. I first met Bruce when I was a student at UCLA looking to continue my martial arts studies, which I started in New York City. He taught me the discipline and spirituality of martial arts, which was greatly responsible for me being able to play competitively in the NBA for 20 years with very few injuries.During our years of friendship, he spoke passionately about how frustrated he was with the stereotypical representation of Asians in film and TV. The only roles were for inscrutable villains or bowing servants. In Have Gun - Will Travel, Paladinā€™s faithful Chinese servant goes by the insulting name of ā€œHey Boyā€ (Kam Tong). He was replaced in season four by a female character referred to as ā€œHey Girlā€ (Lisa Lu). Asian men were portrayed as sexless accessories to a scene, while the women were subservient. This was how African-American men and women were generally portrayed until the advent of Sidney Poitier and blaxploitation films. Bruce was dedicated to changing the dismissive image of Asians through his acting, writing and promotion of Jeet Kune Do, his interpretation of martial arts.Thatā€™s why it disturbs me that Tarantino chose to portray Bruce in such a one-dimensional way. The John Wayne machismo attitude of Cliff (Brad Pitt), an aging stuntman who defeats the arrogant, uppity Chinese guy harks back to the very stereotypes Bruce was trying to dismantle. Of course the blond, white beefcake American can beat your fancy Asian chopsocky dude because that foreign crap doesnā€™t fly here.I might even go along with the skewered version of Bruce if that wasnā€™t the only significant scene with him, if weā€™d also seen a glimpse of his other traits, of his struggle to be taken seriously in Hollywood. Alas, he was just another Hey Boy prop to the scene. The scene is complicated by being presented as a flashback, but in a way that could suggest the stuntmanā€™s memory is cartoonishly biased in his favor. Equally disturbing is the unresolved shadow that Cliff may have killed his wife with a spear gun because she nagged him. Classic Cliff. Is Cliff more heroic because he also doesnā€™t put up with outspoken women?I was in public with Bruce several times when some random jerk would loudly challenge Bruce to a fight. He always politely declined and moved on. First rule of Bruceā€™s fight club was donā€™t fight ā€” unless there is no other option. He felt no need to prove himself. He knew who he was and that the real fight wasnā€™t on the mat, it was on the screen in creating opportunities for Asians to be seen as more than grinning stereotypes. You can read the post hereĀ for more info, but I wanted to just add a bit about what this entails from my POV, on the Support team.Ā  Somewhere between Ā¼ to 1/3 of all our tickets last month were in Chinese (somewhere upwards of 300 out of 1200 or so), almost all from users just setting up their accounts or trying to find out how to get an invitation.Ā  A lot of the tickets are what Iā€™d characterize asĀ ā€œintroā€ tickets - they say hi, list favourite fandoms or pairings, or provide samples of fic theyā€™ve written. Although this isnā€™t necessary on AO3, this is not uncommon in Chinese fandom sites that you have to prove your credentials to get in (in fact it wasnā€™t uncommon in English-language fandom sites 15-20 years ago).Ā  We respond to all of these tickets, even the ones that just say hi.Ā  We check whether the user has managed to receive their invite or get their account sent up, and if they havenā€™t, we help them do so.Ā  This means taking every single ticket through our Chinese translation team twice, once so we make sure we understand the initial ticket, and then again to translate our reply.Ā 
This is a challenging process, although weā€™ve found ways to streamline it and can normally get a reply out pretty quickly (like within a few days).Ā  We do it because this is part of why AO3 exists in the first place - to provide a safe haven where users can post their works without worrying about censorship or sudden crackdowns on certain kinds of content.Ā  We do it because this is important, and helping these users get their accounts and be able to share their works safely is why weā€™re here.Ā  We hope that weā€™ll be able to help as many of them as possible.Ā Ā 
There have been a few (thankfully few, that Iā€™ve seen) complaints about these new AO3 users not always knowing how things work - what language to tag with, or what fandom tags to use, for instance.Ā  To this I would say:
1. Have patience and be considerate.Ā  They are coming to a new site that they arenā€™t familiar with, and using it in a language they may not be expert in, and it might take a while to learn the ropes.Ā  You can filter out works tagged in Chinese if you donā€™t want to see them.Ā  Or just scroll past.Ā Ā 
2. You can report works tagged with the wrong language or the wrong fandom to our Policy and Abuse team using the link at the bottom of any page.Ā  This will not cause the authors toĀ ā€œget in troubleā€ (a concern Iā€™ve heard before, as people are reluctant to report for these reasons).Ā  It means the Policy and Abuse team will contact them to ask them to change the language/fandom tag, and if the creator doesnā€™t, they can edit it directly.Ā 
If you remember Strikethrough or the FF.net porn ban or similar purges, please keep them in mind and consider that these users are going through something similar or potentially worse.Ā  This is why AO3 exists.Ā  We are doing our best to try and help make the transition smooth.Ā Ā 

I am a Taiwanese and Iā€™d like to put some context behind the recent influx of China based AO3 users.
China is tightening their freedom of speech in recent years after Xi has became the chairman (he even canceled the 10 years long term of service of chairman, meaning he can stay as the leader of China as long as he livesā€“he has became a dictator). 
They censor words that are deemed ā€œsensitiveā€, you canā€™t type anything to criticize the chinise government. Big social media platform wonā€™t even post the posts containing sensitive words. You donā€™t have the freedom of publish books without the books being approved by the government either.
To disguise this whole Ninety Eighty-Four nightmare, they started to pick on the easy target: the women and the minorities (China is getting more and more misogynistic as a result of the government trying to control their male population through encouraging them to control the female population through ā€œchinese tradition family valueā€ but thatā€™s another story). 
Last year, the chinese government arrested a woman who is a famous yaoi/BL novel writer named 天äø€ and sentenced her 10 years in jail for ā€œselling obscene publicationsā€ and ā€œillegal publicationā€ (sheā€™s not the only BL writer who got arrested. Meanwhile, multiple cases where men raped women only get about 2 years of jail time in China). Itā€™s a warning to anyone who want to publish anything thatā€™s ā€œnot approvedā€ by the government that they can literally ruin you.Ā  
Just recently the chinese government ā€œcontactedā€ website owners of one of their largest romance/yaoi/slash fiction sites 
ę™‰ę±Ÿ

and announced that for now on, for the sake of a Clean Society, they canā€™t write anything thatā€™s slightly ā€œobsceneā€. No sex scene, no sexual interaction, they canā€™t even write any bodily interaction below neck (Iā€™m not kidding here). 
But thatā€™s not their actual goal. They also listed other restriction such as: canā€™t write anything thatā€™s about the government, the military, the police, ā€œsensitive historyā€, ā€œrace problemsā€, which isā€¦ you basically canā€™t write anything that might be used as a tool to criticize the government (as many novels did). 
This recent development really hurt the chinese fanfic writers. They canā€™t write anything without the fear of being put on the guillotine by the government to show their control. Most of them donā€™t even think that deep politically, they just want to write slash fictions. But there are no platform safe in China, thatā€™s why the sudden influx of chinese users to AO3. 
I bet it wonā€™t be long before AO3 got banned in China, but until then, be a little bit patient to them. As much as I hate the chinese government, I pity their people. 


Iā€™m crying so loudā€¦As a Chinese, you donā€™t know how your kindness meant to us. When Iā€™m young, I read 1984, and I thought this story is so unrealistic, but now, itā€™s getting tougher and tougher for fanfic and the writer in China. Thank you ao3. The OTWā€™s account on Weibo, the biggest Chinese social media site, is
 constantly fielding questions from Chinese users about how to get 
invitations, how to post, all of it. Chinese fans deeply want to learn 
how to use AO3. The difference between Lofterā€™s posting system and AO3ā€²s
 is perhaps even wider than the gulf between Tumblr and AO3. But imagine
 if you had to navigate across that gap in a language you didnā€™t speak, 
using translation programs that donā€™t understand fan terminology.
This is exactly
 what the AO3 was built to deal with. We just didnā€™t get a chance to get
 the internationalization done first, so things may be bumpy for a 
while. We are all part of fandom, so letā€™s take care not to leave 
anyone out.


Just in case it isnā€™t clear to anyone? This. This right here is precisely why the AO3 doesnā€™t police content or remove things that are icky or obscene.

Once I worked as an intern in the state capital. One of the representatives I worked for was this middle-aged guy. And he hated the tampon and napkin machines in the womenā€™s bathrooms. Hated them. He insisted that they werenā€™t necessary.
I found out why after Iā€™d been working there, oh, about a month. My period started suddenly, as it sometimes does, and I asked to excuse myself to go to the ladiesā€™ room. He wanted to know why. I told him.
He started ranting about how lazy women were. How we wasted time. How we were so careless and unhygenic, and that there was no call for that. He finished by telling me that I certainly was NOT going to the ladiesā€™ room and that I was just going to sit there and work. He finished this off with a decisive nod, as if Iā€™d just been told and there could be no possible argument.

I didnā€™t know the term then, but he believed that tampons were dildos. Which was why he and a good number of his friends considered them luxuries.
And thatā€™s how, at twenty, I had to give a talk on menstruation to a middle-aged married state representative who was one of my bosses. American politics, ladies and gentlemen.

It was Grace Lee Whitney herself who suggested to Roddenberry that they wear them, and Nichelle Nichols has said she never had a problem with them. They are a product of their time yes, but the women chose to wear them because of the context of that time.Ā

Theyā€™re given the power of choice, regardless of gender or sex.

Do you know how many dogs Iā€™ve met that get scared or anxious around men because in their previous home men hit them? A lot, and they are very protective of the women who have adopted them now.
Men who are violent towards women are often violent towards animals as well. They think weā€™re all chattel. If a man wants you to choose between your dog or cat or him, dump the guy. Those animals will love you for the rest of your life, loyal and true.

Actually, I have something to add.

The first time my sister came to visit, via plane, after I got my dog, pupper growled at her and wouldnā€™t go near her for the first day. Next visit was by car (two day drive)and pupper LOVED my sister. They snuggled and played and none of us could figure out why the change. We thought maybe the scent of my sisters cat had lingered on her clothes, making that first visit a rough one. Whereas when she came by car, the scent had had time to wear off. Well that was partially trueā€¦
Fast forward about six months when I went north to visit my family. My sister walked into my parentsā€™ house and pupper ran to greet my sister. Stopped dead in her tracks and started growling and barking. Hackles raised, full protection mode. My sisters husband had just walked in behind her.
My precious puppy wanted NOTHING to do with him. She barked, growled, ran away, and sat between him and my sister. Y'all my dog had spent maybe a weekend a half around my sister but protected her like this was her flesh and blood.
Eventually, my sister filed for divorce on grounds of ā€œExtreme and repeated mental, emotional, and sexual abuse.ā€ Divorce was final in less than a month because her claims were substantiated.
Trust the dog, honey. They KNOW.


Iā€™ve never owned dogs, but I used to work with horses (which are a lot like big dogs). 
There was this one horse I worked with named Tonto. He was a doll. He followed me like a puppy, snuck treats out of my pocket, he was the sweetest thing. We were practically inseparable. 
A guy I was considering dating came to visit me one day, and Tonto wanted NOTHING to do with him. Normally well behaved, he shoved himself between us and would NOT let this guy near me.  He was stomping, acting really aggressive, and tried to bite the guy. This horse was practically dragging me back toward the barn. At that moment, despite being like, 17, I knew something was up, and ultimately things didnā€™t pan out for guy and me. 
A year later I found out he had lied about his age (he said he was 18 but he was actually 27) he was arrested for sexually assaulting an 11 year old girl.

 I'll be brutally honest and I don't go
 anonymous.
 I've been in exactly the same situation.
 Except that my dogs are not small nor
 yappy: they're mastiffs. 60 kg each.

 He of course never hit them in front of
 me or when he thought I could see. But l
 know my dogs. One of them gave clear
 clues that something's off
 That dog male, young unaltered Cane
 Corso - could've ripped my ex. apart in
 no time at all. He didn't. The dog was
 more intelligent than him. All my dog did
 for couple of months was to avoid the
 jerk. He silently left the room anytime
 the ex. was around. He left the bed and
 stopped cuddling whenever ex. entered
 the room

 And when the ex. escalated to hitting me
 the dog slowly stood up and moved
 towards us: he got in between.
 Submissively. He put his big body in
 front of me, to be hit instead of me.
 Choose for yourself, who you want to
 keep.

Do you know how many dogs Iā€™ve met that get scared or anxious around men because in their previous home men hit them? A lot, and they are very protective of the women who have adopted them now.
Men who are violent towards women are often violent towards animals as well. They think weā€™re all chattel. If a man wants you to choose between your dog or cat or him, dump the guy. Those animals will love you for the rest of your life, loyal and true.

Actually, I have something to add.
The other day I saw a story where a woman was asking why her dogs had suddenly started growling at her boyfriend whenever he was in the same room as her son.
And my immediate thought was ā€˜that boyfriend has hurt the kid somehow.ā€™

The Canadian Senate has passed an amendment to a transgender rights bill that would ban trans people from using the bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity. I have a right not to see a penis in the ladies room. Men have a right not to see a lack of a penis  in a menā€™s room.  I have a right to my opinion.  It doesnā€™t make me a homophobe. It does not make me intolerant.   It does not make me a bad person.  Your gender issues are not my issues.  Maybe we as a society need a third option.

If youā€™re seeing a penis in the womenā€™s room, sorry to break it to you buddy but youā€™re the one being gross and peeping in on other women.

 "nice guy" experience?
 So, possibly one of the coolest things I've
 ever seen. I mean you know how you hear the
 "women want him, men want to *be* him"
 stuff in old movies? Well I'm a man and by
 *god* I wanted to be this guy. Anyway!
 I'm having dinner with my girlfriend at
 the time, and behind us are a couple on a
 not going well. Guy was being

 inappropriate comments, the girl doesn't
 look at all comfortable.
 The girl finishes her appetiser really quickly
 my guess is she wanted to get it over with.
 Guy proceeds to comment on it and says
 "well, least I know you can swallow right?"
 Loudly
 Girl goes red and tells him that isn't
 appropriate, he literally waves his hand in
 a "shoo" type motion and says "oh calm
 down I was going to find out in a few hours
 anyway"
 I missed her exact re
 as she moved to a
 hushed tone, but it was fairly obvious what
 was being said-fuck no, fuck off, fuck this.
 He responded with "sweetheart I picked
 lost the
 colour in her face and said nothing.
 No. No. Fuck no. I'm one of those "get
 involved" type of people and there is no way
 I'm sitting here watching this go down. I get
 up. I don't know what I'm going to do, but
 I'm 23, fighting fit and happy to put that
 motherfucker through a wall. I may have had
 a slight temper in my youth. But anyway.
 I was halfway out of my chair when a hand
 came down on my shoulder and I look up
 to this mid-50s but super fit guy who says
 "Easy. I've got this one son". Absolute, total
 confidence in his voice.. so seeing as my
 current plan amounted to "stab him in the
 neck" and I'm already thinking maybe that's
 not the best idea, I sit down.
 He walks over, grabs a nearby chair, flips it
 around and sits down with the couple. Then..
 he pulls out his police ID and puts it on the
 table. Now the guy doesn't have any colour in
 his face
 Cop: "So, I'm quietly celebrating my
 daughters birthday with my family when I
 distinctly hear you threaten this young lady,
 would you care to explain yourself?"
 Guy: "I, ah, well, um, you see.
 Cop: "That's what I thought. Now see, we
 take a *very* dim view of that kind of thing,
 so right now I'm deciding if I want to have
 some of my buddies come pick you up"
 Guy: "oh no well that..."
 Cop: "But that would disrupt everyone's
 dinner, so how about you hand me your ID,
 me, the dn't want yhe staff here and
 settle your bill., the full bill now, this young
 lady shouldn't go hungry on account of your
 poor behaviour. Or we can go with the first
 option, I'll leave it up to you.
 Guy: "No no! That's perfectly fine!" 1*hands
 over ID, gets up and walks very quickly in the
 direction of the counter
 Cop: while writing down the guys details
 1* "Sorry about that miss, I hope I'm not
 intruding it just seemed like you could use
 some help. Oh and don't worry, if you want
 to pursue this further I'll have some of the
 boys pick him up on his way home, we can
 definitely take this further.
 Girl: "No, thank you so much, I wanted to run
 out 30 minutes ago but he drove me here".
 Cop: *shifts from hardarse cop to
 comforting father figure in about half a
 second* "Well I'm here with my daughter,
 she's about your age, perhaps you'd like to
 finish your meal with us? We can run you
 home afterwards if you'd like, unless you'd
 prefer to call someone else?"
 Girl: "Oh.. that would be really nice.. thankyou
 so much!
 *guy returns, so does the hardarse cop*
 Guy: "Uh so, I've paid the bill, if I could have
 back.".

 Cop: "There you go. now I have your details
 right here so I *highly* recommend you
 don't go near or contact this young lady ever
 again.
 Guy: "Yes yes of course, I'm so sorry!"
 The quy pretty much fled the restaurant, the
