iā€™m just gonna take this post for a moment so i can rant but like
i Hate how entitled adults can feel over a childā€™s hair!
it started when i was young myself, i wanted a mohawk, but my dad didnā€™t approve of that look on a ā€œgirlā€, and insisted iā€™d regret such a bold cut. at 16 i was finally given full autonomy over my own head.
but then i have a son and everyone around us is trying to keep his hair short. when we finally moved out just me my partner and him, i told him he doesnā€™t need to get any haircuts he doesnā€™t want.
so he starts growing it out, itā€™s still short but coming on mid-length. his teacher makes a point to tell me itā€™s getting long as if i donā€™t have eyes. i hear her walking out with him one day talking to him about haircuts, as if to coax him into one. eventually i get child services called on me for ā€˜forcing a transgender lifestyleā€™ over what i can only assume is from a combination of me drawing cute ponies on his valentine box and letting him go to school in a ponytail.
he kept it short for awhile after but told me he wanted to grow it out again, so i let him of course. he comes home one day after getting a haircut at his grandpaā€™s and tells me he didnā€™t Want the haircut.
i ask why he got it then and learned he was bribed with a promise of a surprise IF he cut his hair.
tl;dr people need to back the hell up off of children and let them have owership of whatā€™s on THEIR body! /rant


Same thing about getting a child to curl or straighten their hair. Or do anything with it. Just let kids have control over their bodies.


This happened to me when I was little too!! Growing up I had naturally tight Shirley Temple curls. The only problem was that you canā€™t get a hair brush through it if your life depended on it until it grew out over a few years. 
but This One Lady from church decided that leaving my hair messy and curly was child abuse and threatened to call social services on my family every damn time she saw me until one day she was the designated kid watcher and ho boy my momma tells me i came out with tears in my eyes and greasy slicked down hair and thatā€™s where she ends the story because i think my mother beat her ass but yeah.
Leave kids hair alone.

Iā€™m going to be honest, parents who are super-controlling of their childrenā€™s hair creep me the fuck out and Iā€™m not entirely certain why except that I get a vague feeling they kind of relegate them to, ā€œannoying talking dollā€ status.

I loved my daughterā€™s long blond hair. It was thick and wavy and beautiful but when she told me she wanted it cut shortĀ ā€˜like a boyā€™(she was four)Ā  I took her to the salon and let her whack it off.Ā 
The stylist was skeptical, ā€˜are you sure?ā€ and the thing is, she said this to me, not my daughter. So I asked my girlĀ ā€˜are you sure you want it cut short?ā€™ She was. The hair went. The stylist acted nervous most of the way through like she was waiting for one of us to burst into tears, but it looked cute! And my daughter loved it! (And itā€™s been short ever since.)

Autonomy over your hair is bodily autonomy and we as a culture need to start holding bodily autonomy as sacred

My family, for years, wouldnā€™t let me dye/cut my hair really short. I could understand the dye, but the shortest theyā€™d let me go is a bob. They even let me dye my hair before letting me go that short. Iā€™m finally in control of my hair and my hair is one of my favorite things about myself. Itā€™s an easy way to express myself.  
 Let kids do what they want with their hair! Let them have fun with their hair before theyā€™re told to grow up and have ā€˜professionalā€™ hair! 

My mom had a monopoly over my hair. Wouldnā€™t let me wear it natural, was obsessed with me having flyaways in the front and wouldnā€™t let me get out of the car in the mornings until they were flat, permed it when I was 10, wouldnā€™t let me cut it off for years after even though it was really damaged, vocally disapproved when I finally cut it as short as sheā€™d let me.
When I moved out I stopped putting any heat in it and a few years later I cut it all off again. The second cut was my decision alone and it felt like a weight lifted off me, like no one could ever tell me what to do with it again or tell me ā€œI needed itā€ to be pretty.

The male soldiers on Spartacus: Blood and Sand were eating pretty much chicken and veggies for every meal to maintain a ā€œlookā€. 
Why is this such a big deal? Because all these characters are considered physical goals for men. These are actual unobtainable physical standards for men. Male body image issues get swept under the rug so often that some people donā€™t even think they exist.

You want proof? Just check out that scene in Captain America: First Avenger where Cap just transformed into that beautiful beefcake of a man. Agent Carterā€™s actress just HAD to touch them muscles, it was completely unscripted. 

Chris Evans had to wear shirts so small they physically hurt, and he dislocated a shoulder during the helicopter scene in Civil War. But who cares, girls got to wet their panties watching Captain America flex.

If we are talking about unrealistic physical standards of male fitness given to us by movies, I would like to mention HughĀ ā€œWolverineā€ Jackman here.
Yeah, he is ripped, isnā€™t he?
Well, it is true, but to get that kind of definition, he went through 36 hour period of dehydration, which caused him to temporarily lose 10 pounds of ā€œwater weightā€.Ā

real feminism acknowledges the unhealthy standards that men are held to. radfems brush them off as non-existent

one of the reasons producers get away with this in men and no one criticizes it is because we are fed the lie that this body type is 1) attainable and 2) healthy.
We know starving women down to skinniness is unhealthy, but you see an overmuscled man and you donā€™t immediately think dehydration.Ā

You look at extremely thin slices of brain tissue. And the only way to get that brain tissue is to euthanize and decapitate the animal, and send the entire head to the state lab where they can process it. Doesnā€™t matter why the bite happened, or how bad it was, or if the animal is completely healthy and doesnā€™t have rabies. If skin was broken, it has to be reported, and the animalā€™s fate is out of your hands.Ā

A colleague of my dadā€™s lives next to a lake, and looked out the window one morning to see a duck trapped in the ice. A crow swooped down. ā€œOh hell,ā€ she thought, expecting carnage, because crows are opportunists. But the crow chipped at the ice with its beak until the duck was free.

Idk of this counts but a few crows saved me from a magpie swooping attack once ,theyā€™re bros who can tell when magpies are being unreasonable and need to chill

I love crows so damn much. When I was fifteen, I hit a pretty serious bout of depression, to the point I was in my room for months. Well, a family of crows made a nest in a tree outside my window. There were two parents and two chicks. One chick was healthy and strong. One was weak, and had a caw like something being strained. It sounded more like a rooster crowing and so my parents jokingly named him ā€˜Buckā€™.Wellā€¦ months passed and Buckā€™s sibling was taught to fly. His parents focused on the sibling because the sibling was strong. The father stayed behind to try and teach Buck, but I saw him try to fly, fail, and crash to the floor. His father helped him back up into the tree.
Every day, I would watch Buck from my window until one day I opened it and started talking to him. He was small and gangly and he couldnā€™t caw right. His feathers were all over the place and I felt a kinship. So I made a deal with him. I told him that if he could do it, if he could fly, then I could find the strength to get up. Wellā€¦ near the end of the season, after talking with him every day, I finally saw him get out of the nest. He went to the edge of his branch, braced himself, and jumpedā€¦ and just before he hit the ground, he soaredĀ back up into the sky. I cheered harder than I ever had before.
That winter, Buck left the area. I was crestfallen. I felt like Iā€™d lost a friend. But I was so damn proud of him.Ā 
Cut to the next spring? Iā€™m walking up the driveway one day when suddenly I hear a soundā€¦ a broken caw. I look up, and Buck is sitting in a tree above my head. He stared at me and puffed his feathers, then hopped down in front of me and cawed again. I was so damn thrilled, and I told him how proud I was of him. He ruffled his feathers and then soared off into his old tree.Ā 
That summer? I heard two broken caws. One from Buckā€¦ and one from his chick.
Cut to ten years later? We have a family of crows who all have a very distinct caw and they come here and spend every spring, summer, and fall on our property. Buck still greets me every spring.

Donā€™t forget the Russian Crow SLEDDING DOWN A ROOF not once, but twice.Ā 

this one morning i kept hearing really loud caws, i remember it was like 5am, LIKE REALLY LOUD AND ANNOYING AND AGGRESSIVE, so loud that i could hear it through a closed window, and i eventually went outside to check it out. there was a crow on my front lawn, it had an injury on its head and couldnā€™t fly and there were two other crows circling right above it, and they were cawing like mad.Ā 
i tried to get close and take a better look and one of them dived super low and tried to attack me. so i went back in the house and chopped some sliced raw meat and tossed it at him from a distance.
a few more times later, very soon after, they could tell i was trying to help, and did not attack me. i was ā€œallowedā€ to walk up close and pick him up, he couldnā€™t drink water properly so i had to dip my finger in a bowl and stick it in his mouth.
i did this few times a day and it went on for about a week before he disappeared, i thought he recovered and left, but he came back the next day and lands on me, and i see him around the block quite often, and he would come sit on my shoulder for a few minutes and then fly away again. i feel like iā€™ve adopted a son.

Like, I wouldnā€™t want to be on bad terms with a crow, but they are a really smart animal, they arenā€™t scary You just want to be nice to them because they will know and they will remember, and they will pay you back if you treat them a certain way.
As a side note, I volunteered at a rehab (Hope for Wildlife), where they were rehabbing a crow with a broken wingā€“who was named Russell Crow. He kept pulling his bandage off so a sleeve was cut off some old clothing and put on him like a little sweater.Ā

When Brad Pitt did Fight Club, he was cutting weight for every single scene to maintain his physique at 155. Iā€™ve youā€™ve ever cut weight, you know how horrible that must have been. He did it because they needed a ā€œlookā€. 
Changing Tatum said his Magic Mike body doesnā€™t last for more than five days. He starved down and dehydrated his already fit physique for a ā€œlookā€.
The male soldiers on Spartacus: Blood and Sand were eating pretty much chicken and veggies for every meal to maintain a ā€œlookā€. 
Why is this such a big deal? Because all these characters are considered physical goals for men. These are actual unobtainable physical standards for men. Male body image issues get swept under the rug so often that some people donā€™t even think they exist.

You want proof? Just check out that scene in Captain America: First Avenger where Cap just transformed into that beautiful beefcake of a man. Agent Carterā€™s actress just HAD to touch them muscles, it was completely unscripted. 

Chris Evans had to wear shirts so small they physically hurt, and he dislocated a shoulder during the helicopter scene in Civil War. But who cares, girls got to wet their panties watching Captain America flex.

If we are talking about unrealistic physical standards of male fitness given to us by movies, I would like to mention HughĀ ā€œWolverineā€ Jackman here.
Yeah, he is ripped, isnā€™t he?
Well, it is true, but to get that kind of definition, he went through 36 hour period of dehydration, which caused him to temporarily lose 10 pounds of ā€œwater weightā€.Ā 
Thus during the fight scene he was filming, he was a hair breadth from blacking out whole time, just to look unrealistically muscular.
As he said during interview with Steven Colbert, ā€œIf You go three days without water, You will die. Then, when You are halfway there they shout ā€˜Roll it!ā€
Itā€™s the same with professional bodybuilders whoĀ get into periods of extreme fasting and dehydration to lower their fat-to-muscle ratio to inhuman levels, all in hopes of making their muscle definition a bit better.
According to experts, healthyĀ body fat percentage for a healthy male ranges from 8% to 20%, depending on height, lifestyle and numerous other variables.Ā 
Fitness model and professional bodybuilderĀ Helmut Strebl also known asĀ ā€œWorldā€™s Most Shredded Manā€ as he supposedly managed to get his body fat percentage below 5%ā€¦
ā€¦ But only when he partakes in competitions, since it is not humanly possible to live with such low fat percentage of oneā€™s body for longer periods of time.
I mean, yeah, he keeps a draconian training regime, as well as a very strict diet even off-season, but looks much more human thenā€¦
There are documented cases of incredibly fit and muscular bodybuilders fainting on the stage in the middle of their flexing routines, as well as several who outright died, because of cardiac arrest caused by their blood becoming too thick, due to long dehydrationā€¦

one of the reasons producers get away with this in men and no one criticizes it is because we are fed the lie that this body type is 1) attainable and 2) healthy.
We know starving women down to skinniness is unhealthy, but you see an overmuscled man and you donā€™t immediately think dehydration.Ā

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!

So if anyoneā€™s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i sayĀ ā€œtop of the legā€ iā€™m not talking about the crotch (please donā€™t flag me tumblr itā€™s an anatomical term) iā€™m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
Itā€™s easier to see what Iā€™m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:Ā 
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!

Alright sit down for some Art World Drama bcause this is what I live for.
So, sometime last year (?) science invented Vantablack, which is the darkest possible shade of black. Art world got incredibly excited. But as it needs to be very carefully made in a lab, itā€™s hard to get a hold of, and is extremely expensive. Enter Anish Kapoor, aka FuckFace McGee. Anish Kapoor buys the rights to Vantablack. He is the only human being on the planet that can legally use it, and heā€™s kind of a prick about it.
Art world is not thrilled with that.
Enter Stuart Semple.
Stuart Semple is an artist, and also makes pigments to sell in his free time. Stuart Semple is astoundingly pissed about this Vantablack nonsense, and Anish Kapoorā€™s dickery. Stuart Semple makes a new pigment, the brightest shade of pink ever, called Pinkest Pink, and puts it for sale on the internet. To be bought by everybody except Anish Kapoor. Literally, to purchase, you need to confirm that you are not Anish Kapoor, do not associate with him, and will not sell or give the pigment to Anish Kapoor or his associates. Art world has a good laugh, everyone buys Pinkest Pink because itā€™s awesome, and damn it we deserve something.
Anish Kapoor however is a penis, and will not take this lying down, because HOW DARE he not have literally everything.
Anish Kapoor gets his London associates to buy him a thing of Pinkest Pink, and being such a classy human being, posts a picture to instagram of him with his middle finger covered in Pinkest Pink, captioned withĀ ā€œUp yours. #pinkā€
Everyone flips shit, because. Yā€™know. Fuck that guy. Especially Stuart Semple. For context here, Anish Kapoor is one of the richest artists on the planet, and has repeatedly been referred to as everything wrong with the art world, and the epitome of the art worlds elitism problem. Heā€™s a giant douchebag. Meanwhile Stuart Semple makes pigments just to get them out there. He turns 0 profit from his now enourmously popular pigments.
Stuart Semple launches an investigation as to who the fuck leaked Pinkest Pink, and plans to strike back. He does so by releasing two new products. First is Diamond Dust, which is a glitter made from glass, so that a painting is still visible after itā€™s applied, but glitters like a mofo. Itā€™s the most reflective glitter out there, and is available to everyone who isnā€™t Anish Kapoor. And it being made of glass, if you stick your finger in there, itā€™s going to hurt quite a bit, so that was Stuart Sempleā€™s way of sayingĀ ā€œshove your middle finger in this, asshole, see what happensā€. Except without saying that, because he can get an insult across while still being fucking classy.
He also releases Black 2.0, created with the help of over a thousand artists worldwide.
Black 2.0 is the answer to Vantablack. Black 2.0 is a slightly less black black, but looks functionally the same to the human eye. Itā€™s completely safe, smells like cherries, and costs four pounds. Vantablack is highly toxic, potentially explosive, needs to be applied in a special laboratory and sealed properly, canā€™t be moved across borders, can reach 300 degrees celsius if youā€™re not extremely careful, and costs thousands of dollars. Anish Kapoor is the only human being who can use Vantablack. He is the only human being who cannot use Black 2.0.
So I think we can guess who got the better deal.
And thus the feud ends, Kapoor defeated.
ā€¦But not quite.
Kapoor, in this entire afair, has made exactly two comments to the public. The first being his charming message about aquiring Pinkest Pink, the second being claiming to Buzzfeed that he and his small army of lawyers will be suing Semple, an extremely poor artist who cannot afford a lawyer.
No lawsuit has been made yet, fyi.
The point is, Kapoor is a prick, and doesnā€™t like talking to the lower classes. So one day in July 2017, he decides he needs another floor on his London studio apartment, and starts making arrangements to have it built. His neighbors are fucking pissed, because this will ruin the light of their apartments. They call to Semple to save them, or at the very least piss Kapoor off some more.
Semple answers to the call, and releases two new paints, Phaze and Shift, as always, banned to Kapoor. They change colours, Phaze with temperature, and Shift is just iridescent. Shift needs to be painted over Black 2.0 to work, and Phaze just works on its own.
So thatā€™s been the art world for the last two years.
Basically, get fucked Anish Kapoor your bean sucks and so does your vantablack.

Once the poor discover how to make some bit of cheap food taste good, the rich take it away via driving the price of it up.

Ribs were garage meat.Ā Just look at them, there is hardly any meat on the bone, you have to eat them by hand usually, and they are messy. They where an undesirable cheap sourceĀ of junk meat. But the poor being the poor made them taste good. (Because they donā€™t have much to choose from.) The rich discovered the meals the poor made with them and decided they liked ribs too. People discovered they could sell a few ribs to rich people and make way more money then selling lots of ribs to poor people and the price was driven up.

They did the same to brisket.Ā  You used to be able to get brisket for less than a dollar a pound, which meant you could get a twenty pound brisket fairly cheaply.Ā  And then you smoked it, sliced it, and had meat for weeks if not a full month.Ā  And it was tasty.Ā  I grew up eating brisket at least once a month because my family could afford it.
It was a cheap meat because no rich person looks at the dangly part of the neck of a cow and goesĀ ā€˜ooh, that looks tasty!ā€™.
But then Food Network started showcasing things like barbecued brisket.Ā  Rich people started showing up at places that werenā€™t just Rib Crib to get their barbeque.Ā  And the price of brisket went up.Ā  A lot.
I regularly see it for over five dollars a pound in stores now.Ā  And while yeah, that might not seem like a lot when youā€™re talking only a pound or two of meat, brisket is normally sold in ten to twenty pound sizes.Ā  Itā€™s become completely unaffordable to the people that made it delicious.
Sushi used to be really cheap, too, until it becameĀ ā€˜trendyā€™.Ā  Guess why youā€™re now paying twelve dollars for your order of California rolls?Ā  Because rich people discovered something that poor people had been eating for ages.
Noticed the prices of fajita meat, chicken thighs, or ham hocks has gone up recently?Ā  You guessed it.Ā  Rich people are taking our food and now weā€™re scrambling to afford the things that we grew up eating.

Lobster is a perfect example of this phenomenon.Ā For hundreds of years, lobster was regarded as a sort of insect larvae from the depth of the sea. It had zero appeal as aĀ ā€œluxury foodā€ until people living in NY and Boston developed a taste for it. Before the 19th century, it was considered a ā€œpoverty foodā€ or used as fertilizer and bait - some household servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice a week.It was also commonly served at prisons, which tells you something about prison food.
Only by cleverly marketing lobster as an indulgence for the privileged made it cost so much. It became a vehicle for enormous profit spawning a multi-billion dollar global industry in the process. This mythical affection for lobster flesh - not its practical value in terms of taste, nutrition, or any other reasonable consideration - drives its value.
