Afternoon Gothamites! Today (April 29), History of the Batman wants to wish actress Michelle Pfeiffer a happy 59th birthday! For us Batfans, Pfeiffer is known for her portrayal as Selina Kyle - Catwoman in Tim Burton's 1992 feature film Batman Returns. The second installment of Warner Bros.' initial Batman film series, with Michael Keaton reprising the title role of Bruce Wayne-Batman, Batman Returns introduces the characters of Max Shreck (Christopher Walken), a business tycoon who teams up with the Penguin (Danny DeVito) to take over Gotham City. Re-created by Daniel Waters, the character is based on the Selina Kyle from Mindy Newell's 1989 series "Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper" and has heavy influence on Pre-Crisis Catwoman. After Nicole Kidman and Demi Moore turn down the roles, Pfeiffer's expressed interest made a spark. A new Catwoman for this transitional period for Batman, Michelle Pfeiffer is depicted as the lonely and frustrated secretary of corrupt tycoon Maximillian "Max" Shreck. After she accidentally discovers his plot to build a power plant that would steal Gotham's electricity, Shreck attempts to murder her by pushing her out the window of his top-story office. Though her fall is partly broken, Selina lies motionless on the snow-covered ground seemingly dead. Then mysteriously she is revived by a group of alley cats gnawing at her. Returning home, Selina's repressed rage transforms her into the clever super-villain Catwoman. With one of her nine 'lives' left by the end of the film, between Selina's soft and caring demeanor and Catwoman's sultry purr in the night Michelle Pfeiffer called this one of her most "challenging roles" and critics called it one of her most "iconic roles" that will be famous forever.
