Feel free to pretend that your OC is Cousinā€™s kid, itā€™ll probably work out.)Little Knife:Ā  Cousinā€™s youngest son and the last he had with Fury before she died. A cocky little shit sometimes, but with good reason. While smaller than all his sibs, his agility and stealth made him an asset to hunting parties.Ā 

His relationship w/ Jagged-Tooth sucks. He and Kal'thnde are very close, tho, as Cousin was already aging and too busy chaperoning youngbloods to pay him as much attention as he shouldā€™ve, Kal and his sisters more or less raised him and got between him and Jagged-Tooth often.



Lauded for his nimbleness and his lightning speed while maintaining near-silence, he has become an asset in his hunting party. His abilities also make him sought after for off-world reconnaissance, where he travels to planets to review and evaluate their suitability for hunting.Little Knife is one of the 20 or so Yautja who join Cousin to form the Yautja Faction, against the orders of the Elder Council. 12 of his brothers also form the team, including Jagged-Tooth and Kalā€™thnde.Ā Little Flame:Ā 

Celebrated Huntress, Several times Champion of inter-tribal games and so coveted and beloved beyond her own clan. Aggressive, abrasive, but loyal, like her father in his youth. Little Flame is close to Kal and Little Knife, and was one of Cousinā€™s children that fought against Jagged-Toothā€™s bad attitudeā€“ballsy, as heā€™s biotic. She and the eldest brother never really learned to get along, but there is begrudging respect for each others achievements.

Little Flame basically saved her fatherā€™s life when at one point she heard whispers that some elders were speaking of sending Enforcers or some other group of Hunters to go after Cousin and his Renegades. She sent him warnings, and killed most of the would-be trackers herself.Naniandi:Ā 

Cousinā€™s eldest Daughter. Sometimes called Furious Patience, a play on her motherā€™s name (Patient Fury), since sheā€™s so much like her. One of the tribe matriarchs, and often invited alongside the tribeā€™s elders to speak diplomacy with other clans when needed. Naniandi is the closest Jagged-Tooth is to any of his family, maybe having to do w/ how much like his mother she is, even though she is a century or so younger than him. Sheā€™s basically all around respected by everyone in Cousinā€™s family, as well as their overall clan

Itā€™s Naniandiā€™s influence and hard work that made it possible for Cousin and the remainder of the Yautja faction to return to Homeworld after theyā€™d disgraced themselves to go fight alongside Shepard. She ultimately convinced the elders to reinstate honor and title to her father.

Yautja joke (but only a little) about wishing to birth armies. Compared to others his age, Cousin only has a moderate amount of offspring, but those that survived into his old age came out fierce, capable, and loyal to their family. Iā€™ve asked parents about this and they always say they are teaching the child responsibility and ā€œrespect for other peopleā€™s things.ā€ If I point out that the child accidentally broke their own toy they always sayĀ ā€œI bought them that toyā€ orĀ ā€œmy sister gave that to them.ā€
The problem is that parents view all possessions as not really belonging to the child. A part of them always seems to think that the adult who provided the money is the real owner
If a parent breaks a dish they see it as breaking something that already belonged to them, but if a child breaks it they see it as the child breaking something that belonged to the parents 
People raising children need to realize that household possessions belong to the entire household. If everyone has to use that plate then it belongs to everyone and anyone can have a forgivable accident with it. Itā€™s okay to deem certain possessions as just yours and ask everyone in the house to respect that, but extend the same respect to your childā€™s belongings

Big mood. I know most of these are talking about little little kids, but hereā€™s a tale from middle school. I had forgotten to charge my phone one night, and this was back when cell phones used to beep loudly when they were low on battery. I kept hearing the noise throughout the afternoon and not recognizing what it was because Iā€™d never heard it before. When I finally did realize what it was, I was in science class and my fellow classmates were making presentations. I reached into my bag to try to turn off the phone, and then the low-battery sound went off, loud enough for the teacher to hear it. She confiscated my phone in front of everyone, and I didnā€™t get it back until after the weekend because it was a Friday. I was really embarrassed, especially to tell my parents.
When I got my phone back that Monday, my teacher said it was important for me to learn this lesson now since in college they wouldnā€™t tolerate phones going off. Fast forward to when I was in college, any time someoneā€™s phone went off, either the professor would tell them to turn it off, or they would say, ā€œOh, my bad,ā€ and turn it off themselves, and everyone would move on. I even had a professor who danced around while someoneā€™s phone went off, and it was a welcome moment of levity during the lecture. 
I say all this to say, one of the worst aspects of being a child/teen was adults assuming my intentions were malicious.

The problem is, even if families are forgiving the culture around children still effects the child. I use myself as proof of that. 
A few times between the ages of 4 and 18 I broke things. I broke my grandmaā€™s favorite Christmas ornament. Her first question was: ā€œAre you hurt?ā€ and when I apologized profusely she said ā€œIā€™m just glad you werenā€™t hurt.ā€
I broke a few plates. I broke a couple glasses. Every time my dadā€™s first response was ā€œDid you get cut?ā€ the second step was cleaning up the broken bits, and the third was a discussion of what led to me breaking it and how I could avoid doing that in the future.
Same with spills. Same with stains. My biggest ā€œpunishmentā€ from my immediate family was being taught how to clean up the mess I made and being shown in detail how to avoid the same mistake in the future if it was avoidable. There were consequences for my actions, but they were the direct result of those actions and nothing much beyond that.
My family tried so hard to teach me how to deal with accidents in a healthy way. They were patient. They treated every slip-up as a learning opportunity. They showed me a lot of love. The other adults still got to me. Teachers still punished and publicly shamed me and other students for our mess-ups. Extended family members outside of my small supportive circle still yelled at me. My friendsā€™ parents still got mad.
To the point where whenever I messed up my first instinct was that my dad or grandparents were going to punish me, or yell at me, or hit me, even though they never did. They just didnā€™t. They always responded with patience and an attitude of ā€œIā€™m glad youā€™re safe and I want to help you learn from this.ā€ And I was still afraid of messing up. Mortified. Expecting the worst every time.

 A Mental Health Crisis
 What To Do Before, During, And After

 IF YOUR GRADES ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER
 CONTACT YOUR TEACHERS
 This should be the first thing you do when you realise you're in crisis. Email them, and explain your
 situation in short, professional terms. You do not have to include details about your condition. "I have
 a mental health condition" should suffice as to the nature of the issue.
 Tell them that you are going to arrange to see a medical professional as soon as possible, and ask what
 process you should go through to defer/get an extension on assessment, and if they can help you in
 any way.
 Other people you may have to contact or CC in the email (depending on your school):
 University
 High School
 Head of House
 Class Coordinator
 Faculty/School Admin
 Disability Advisor
 Grade Coordinator
 Head of Department
 Academic Admin
 Counsellor
 School Counsellor
 Student Advocate
 BOOK A DOCTOR/THERAPIST APPOINTMENT ASAP
 This will be the person who can vouch for you the most. It's best if you have seen them before and
 they know you. If you can't get an appointment within a few days, call them and email them (if you
 haven't seen them before this will not work). Make sure to check out what counselling your university
 or school offers.
 During this appointment, the priority is to make a plan to get you back on your feet. This effort will
 not be useful if you stay a mess. Once you've figured that out, get two things from this person. One is
 a medical certificate/letter stating that you have, in fact, been going through this crisis. Second is a
 letter that describes the nature of the crisis, what treatment you're going through, and which people
 to contact (psychiatrists, etc.) who can vouch for this.
 Note: The reason I say to get two letters is because there is still a huge stigma around mental illness,
 and you don't want to reveal that you've got a disorder that's highly stigmatised, only to have it come
 back and bite you in the ass later. Don't provide details unless it's necessary or asked for.
 A STUDENT
 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS
 Most schools and institutions will have a list of a student's rights and responsibilities online. Look them
 up. Know what your rights are as a student. Also look to see if there are state/national laws protecting
 you, or if your school is a part of a network of schools that has its own code. Some people working in
 schools still think mental health issues are trivial, and you never know when they're going to ignore a
 rule to suit themselves. Make sure you can pick on this if it happens to you.
 Pretty much all schools will have protection in place for students with mental illnesses and disabilities,
 so even if you a miss a deadline for a form or make another mistake, they should take your exceptional
 circumstances into account. This is where a student or disability advisor from school can help you.

 IF YOU HAVEN'T REACHED CRISIS YET
 TALK TO A DOCTOR/THERAPIST/COUNSELLOR/TRUSTED ADULT
 If you're going through a hard time, talk to someone who can help you. Any trusted adult or
 professional can help you get back on your feet before it's too late, or refer you to someone who can.
 If it's a new issue, you'll have to see someone like a GP who can refer you to a therapist or mental
 health service.
 Talk to them about what's been happening, and say that you need help. Sometimes, even talking
 about the problem can help you feel better. In these situations, they can also help you figure out what
 you can do at school to catch up/get special help.
 FIGURE OUT HOW TO STUDY WHILE IN A BAD STATE
 Even if you're getting help, it might be some time before you're fully back on track. In these instances,
 try to make the best of a bad situation.
 Can't leave the house? Access lecture recordings and eBooks. Ask your friends to send you their notes,
 or ask the teacher if you can submit your homework via email, or through a friend. Have trouble
 concentrating? Figure out how long you can study without needing a break, and make a schedule
 around that.
 Always make sure to ask your teachers if they can help you with this. Whether it be slightly changing
 the requirements or conditions of a piece of assessment, or simply their understanding that you may
 not be able to attend perfectly, it can make a big difference with your overall marks. If they don't know
 you're struggling, they can't help!
 DON'T PUSH YOURSELF OR OVERTHINK
 When you realise there's an issue, it's easy to fall into panic or try to power through. Don't do this. It'll
 just make you more stressed and aggravate the existing problems, which will make things much worse
 in the long run.
 Though it's hard to believe sometimes, your health and mental health are more important than your
 grades. You can't ignore your mind when it's screaming at you that something is wrong. Listen to it,
 and be easy on yourself.
 The best way to get back to your full potential to ask for help and give yourself what you need. Take a
 break when you need one and practise self-care. It's more important than you might things.

 RECOVERING FROM A BREAKDOWN
 ACCEPT THAT YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH SOMETHING MAJOR
 Once the worst has passed, some people try to brush it off and pretend it never happened. They can
 feel ashamed or embarrassed about what they went through. However, there is absolutely nothing to
 be ashamed or embarrassed about, especially if you had a pre-existing mental health condition. Every
 life has ups and downs and just because yours were a bit more serious than some people's, it doesn't
 mean that you're weak somehow.
 The best thing you can do for yourself is to recognise what happened, and work to prevent it from
 happening again by setting up crisis plans and support networks.
 GET TUTORING TO CATCH UP
 If you've fallen behind, don't worry. There are plenty of ways to catch yourself up and get back on
 track. The best way is to hire a tutor. They can guide you through the work, help you understand
 difficult concepts, and identify the places you need more help.
 Yes, tutors can be expensive, but there's a way to get around this. See if there is anyone who took
 your class the year before who might be willing to tutor you for an hour each week for a discounted
 prince. Similarly, see if there are any students who can help you in exchange for something like
 instrument lessons. And if any of your friends are academically gifted, I'm sure they'd be able to help.
 If all else fails, go to office hours and any free tutoring sessions your school or university offers. Do
 some research, ask around, see what's there.

 Develop one that allows you plenty of breaks and takes into consider any issues you may have with
 fatigue or focusing. If your breakdown was caused by overwork, make sure this one is easier on you.
 Things to include you could include in a healthy routine (but don't micromanage!):
 "I feel crap" time*
 Breaks and meals
 Plenty of sleep and rest
 "You" time (treat yo self)
 Time to plan for the next week
 Exercise (have you tried yoga? Kidding)
 Meditation/mindfulness
 Friend/family social time
 * Remember that the thoughts and feelings caused by mental illness are not shameful, and ignoring
 and forcing them down will only make them worse. If you need to lie in bed feeling miserable, do it.

 Be prepared in case this happens to you. Remind people that it's a medical condition and that you can
 get proof from medical professionals if need be. Plus, there is probably something in your school's
 policies or even the law that protects you when you have a mental illness.
 Remember that just because people are ignorant, that doesn't mean your issue is not 100% real and
 important. Don't let these people make you feel worse.
 YOU CAN DO THIS
 In our darkest moments, it can be hard to believe that we're capable of immense strength, but I
 promise you we are. Whatever obstacle is in your path right now - even if it's your brain chemistry -
 you are going to get through this.
 You've made it through every worst day you've had so far. You've made it through the dark and scary

So many that I actually dropped out of university after 3 weeks in 2016 and had to take the whole year off.                 Patience: Saving Your Grades From
 A Mental Health Crisis
 What To Do Before, During, And After

 IF YOUR GRADES ARE IN IMMEDIATE DANGER
 CONTACT YOUR TEACHERS
 This should be the first thing you do when you realise you're in crisis. Email them, and explain your
 situation in short, professional terms. You do not have to include details about your condition. "I have
 a mental health condition" should suffice as to the nature of the issue.
 Tell them that you are going to arrange to see a medical professional as soon as possible, and ask what
 process you should go through to defer/get an extension on assessment, and if they can help you in
 any way.
 Other people you may have to contact or CC in the email (depending on your school):
 University
 High School
 Head of House
 Class Coordinator
 Faculty/School Admin
 Disability Advisor
 Grade Coordinator
 Head of Department
 Academic Admin
 Counsellor
 School Counsellor
 Student Advocate
 BOOK A DOCTOR/THERAPIST APPOINTMENT ASAP
 This will be the person who can vouch for you the most. It's best if you have seen them before and
 they know you. If you can't get an appointment within a few days, call them and email them (if you
 haven't seen them before this will not work). Make sure to check out what counselling your university
 or school offers.
 During this appointment, the priority is to make a plan to get you back on your feet. This effort will
 not be useful if you stay a mess. Once you've figured that out, get two things from this person. One is
 a medical certificate/letter stating that you have, in fact, been going through this crisis. Second is a
 letter that describes the nature of the crisis, what treatment you're going through, and which people
 to contact (psychiatrists, etc.) who can vouch for this.
 Note: The reason I say to get two letters is because there is still a huge stigma around mental illness,
 and you don't want to reveal that you've got a disorder that's highly stigmatised, only to have it come
 back and bite you in the ass later. Don't provide details unless it's necessary or asked for.
 A STUDENT
 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS
 Most schools and institutions will have a list of a student's rights and responsibilities online. Look them
 up. Know what your rights are as a student. Also look to see if there are state/national laws protecting
 you, or if your school is a part of a network of schools that has its own code. Some people working in
 schools still think mental health issues are trivial, and you never know when they're going to ignore a
 rule to suit themselves. Make sure you can pick on this if it happens to you.
 Pretty much all schools will have protection in place for students with mental illnesses and disabilities,
 so even if you a miss a deadline for a form or make another mistake, they should take your exceptional
 circumstances into account. This is where a student or disability advisor from school can help you.

 IF YOU HAVEN'T REACHED CRISIS YET
 TALK TO A DOCTOR/THERAPIST/COUNSELLOR/TRUSTED ADULT
 If you're going through a hard time, talk to someone who can help you. Any trusted adult or
 professional can help you get back on your feet before it's too late, or refer you to someone who can.
 If it's a new issue, you'll have to see someone like a GP who can refer you to a therapist or mental
 health service.
 Talk to them about what's been happening, and say that you need help. Sometimes, even talking
 about the problem can help you feel better. In these situations, they can also help you figure out what
 you can do at school to catch up/get special help.
 FIGURE OUT HOW TO STUDY WHILE IN A BAD STATE
 Even if you're getting help, it might be some time before you're fully back on track. In these instances,
 try to make the best of a bad situation.
 Can't leave the house? Access lecture recordings and eBooks. Ask your friends to send you their notes,
 or ask the teacher if you can submit your homework via email, or through a friend. Have trouble
 concentrating? Figure out how long you can study without needing a break, and make a schedule
 around that.
 Always make sure to ask your teachers if they can help you with this. Whether it be slightly changing
 the requirements or conditions of a piece of assessment, or simply their understanding that you may
 not be able to attend perfectly, it can make a big difference with your overall marks. If they don't know
 you're struggling, they can't help!
 DON'T PUSH YOURSELF OR OVERTHINK
 When you realise there's an issue, it's easy to fall into panic or try to power through. Don't do this. It'll
 just make you more stressed and aggravate the existing problems, which will make things much worse
 in the long run.
 Though it's hard to believe sometimes, your health and mental health are more important than your
 grades. You can't ignore your mind when it's screaming at you that something is wrong. Listen to it,
 and be easy on yourself.
 The best way to get back to your full potential to ask for help and give yourself what you need. Take a
 break when you need one and practise self-care. It's more important than you might things.

 RECOVERING FROM A BREAKDOWN
 ACCEPT THAT YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH SOMETHING MAJOR
 Once the worst has passed, some people try to brush it off and pretend it never happened. They can
 feel ashamed or embarrassed about what they went through. However, there is absolutely nothing to
 be ashamed or embarrassed about, especially if you had a pre-existing mental health condition. Every
 life has ups and downs and just because yours were a bit more serious than some people's, it doesn't
 mean that you're weak somehow.
 The best thing you can do for yourself is to recognise what happened, and work to prevent it from
 happening again by setting up crisis plans and support networks.
 GET TUTORING TO CATCH UP
 If you've fallen behind, don't worry. There are plenty of ways to catch yourself up and get back on
 track. The best way is to hire a tutor. They can guide you through the work, help you understand
 difficult concepts, and identify the places you need more help.

The first training of Zuko we see, Iroh shoots a fireball right into Zukoā€™s face - while Zuko just stands there unflinching. Itā€™s the very first episode, and Zuko & Iroh are the obvious villains, and it just seems like some macho bs they do.Ā  And then comes the duel with Zhao, and Zuko is down, but when he sees that flaming fist to his face, something lets loose inside him that helps him turn the fight aroundā€¦But itā€™s not until we learn Zukoā€™s backstory that all this gets a whole new meaning.Ā 
Why would Zuko still be on basics if not because he suffered a huge setback after his agni kai? Imagine how much hard work, patience it was to build Zuko back up again, so he would not freeze in blind panic (or curl up in a ball) when fire gets close to his face. I think Iroh practiced this with him all the time until he could stand there unflinching (knowing that Iroh is in full control of his bending and trusting that his uncle would never hurt him). And when it came to the duel with Zhao, Zuko could react in a RL situation instead of freezing up, and turn all the negative feelings (rage, anger, pain, whatever) into fuel to win the fight against a bender who is much more skilled than he is.Ā 
And Iroh obviously drilled him with control and restraint, because no matter how much he lets his rage loose, he has enough control not to hurt Zhao and enough self-restraint not to burn him at the end. I definitely think it was a deliberate choice on Irohā€™s part to hold back on teaching offensive forms to Zuko beyond the basics (knowing that combining those with his unprocessed anger could result in him being out of control and hurt people). Instead, it seems he concentrated on teaching him defensive forms, fire breath, heat control, and so onā€¦


What the FUCK iroh was the real mvp of this whole show my god

Indeed. It goes over many peopleā€™s head, but he made a huge difference. It was mostly assists and defensive plays though, not the flashy stuff.

You can read the post hereĀ for more info, but I wanted to just add a bit about what this entails from my POV, on the Support team.Ā  Somewhere between Ā¼ to 1/3 of all our tickets last month were in Chinese (somewhere upwards of 300 out of 1200 or so), almost all from users just setting up their accounts or trying to find out how to get an invitation.Ā  A lot of the tickets are what Iā€™d characterize asĀ ā€œintroā€ tickets - they say hi, list favourite fandoms or pairings, or provide samples of fic theyā€™ve written. Although this isnā€™t necessary on AO3, this is not uncommon in Chinese fandom sites that you have to prove your credentials to get in (in fact it wasnā€™t uncommon in English-language fandom sites 15-20 years ago).Ā  We respond to all of these tickets, even the ones that just say hi.Ā  We check whether the user has managed to receive their invite or get their account sent up, and if they havenā€™t, we help them do so.Ā  This means taking every single ticket through our Chinese translation team twice, once so we make sure we understand the initial ticket, and then again to translate our reply.Ā 
This is a challenging process, although weā€™ve found ways to streamline it and can normally get a reply out pretty quickly (like within a few days).Ā  We do it because this is part of why AO3 exists in the first place - to provide a safe haven where users can post their works without worrying about censorship or sudden crackdowns on certain kinds of content.Ā  We do it because this is important, and helping these users get their accounts and be able to share their works safely is why weā€™re here.Ā  We hope that weā€™ll be able to help as many of them as possible.Ā Ā 
There have been a few (thankfully few, that Iā€™ve seen) complaints about these new AO3 users not always knowing how things work - what language to tag with, or what fandom tags to use, for instance.Ā  To this I would say:
1. Have patience and be considerate.Ā  They are coming to a new site that they arenā€™t familiar with, and using it in a language they may not be expert in, and it might take a while to learn the ropes.Ā  You can filter out works tagged in Chinese if you donā€™t want to see them.Ā  Or just scroll past.Ā Ā 
2. You can report works tagged with the wrong language or the wrong fandom to our Policy and Abuse team using the link at the bottom of any page.Ā  This will not cause the authors toĀ ā€œget in troubleā€ (a concern Iā€™ve heard before, as people are reluctant to report for these reasons).Ā  It means the Policy and Abuse team will contact them to ask them to change the language/fandom tag, and if the creator doesnā€™t, they can edit it directly.Ā 
If you remember Strikethrough or the FF.net porn ban or similar purges, please keep them in mind and consider that these users are going through something similar or potentially worse.Ā  This is why AO3 exists.Ā  We are doing our best to try and help make the transition smooth.Ā Ā 

I am a Taiwanese and Iā€™d like to put some context behind the recent influx of China based AO3 users.
China is tightening their freedom of speech in recent years after Xi has became the chairman (he even canceled the 10 years long term of service of chairman, meaning he can stay as the leader of China as long as he livesā€“he has became a dictator). 
They censor words that are deemed ā€œsensitiveā€, you canā€™t type anything to criticize the chinise government. Big social media platform wonā€™t even post the posts containing sensitive words. You donā€™t have the freedom of publish books without the books being approved by the government either.
To disguise this whole Ninety Eighty-Four nightmare, they started to pick on the easy target: the women and the minorities (China is getting more and more misogynistic as a result of the government trying to control their male population through encouraging them to control the female population through ā€œchinese tradition family valueā€ but thatā€™s another story). 
Last year, the chinese government arrested a woman who is a famous yaoi/BL novel writer named 天äø€ and sentenced her 10 years in jail for ā€œselling obscene publicationsā€ and ā€œillegal publicationā€ (sheā€™s not the only BL writer who got arrested. Meanwhile, multiple cases where men raped women only get about 2 years of jail time in China). Itā€™s a warning to anyone who want to publish anything thatā€™s ā€œnot approvedā€ by the government that they can literally ruin you.Ā  
Just recently the chinese government ā€œcontactedā€ website owners of one of their largest romance/yaoi/slash fiction sites 
ę™‰ę±Ÿ

and announced that for now on, for the sake of a Clean Society, they canā€™t write anything thatā€™s slightly ā€œobsceneā€. No sex scene, no sexual interaction, they canā€™t even write any bodily interaction below neck (Iā€™m not kidding here). 
But thatā€™s not their actual goal. They also listed other restriction such as: canā€™t write anything thatā€™s about the government, the military, the police, ā€œsensitive historyā€, ā€œrace problemsā€, which isā€¦ you basically canā€™t write anything that might be used as a tool to criticize the government (as many novels did). 
This recent development really hurt the chinese fanfic writers. They canā€™t write anything without the fear of being put on the guillotine by the government to show their control. Most of them donā€™t even think that deep politically, they just want to write slash fictions. But there are no platform safe in China, thatā€™s why the sudden influx of chinese users to AO3. 
I bet it wonā€™t be long before AO3 got banned in China, but until then, be a little bit patient to them. As much as I hate the chinese government, I pity their people. 


Iā€™m crying so loudā€¦As a Chinese, you donā€™t know how your kindness meant to us. When Iā€™m young, I read 1984, and I thought this story is so unrealistic, but now, itā€™s getting tougher and tougher for fanfic and the writer in China. Thank you ao3. Thank you for the people who care about Chinese people. (hope I didnā€™t spell anything wrong)

The OTWā€™s account on Weibo, the biggest Chinese social media site, is
 constantly fielding questions from Chinese users about how to get 
invitations, how to post, all of it. Chinese fans deeply want to learn 
how to use AO3. The difference between Lofterā€™s posting system and AO3ā€²s
 is perhaps even wider than the gulf between Tumblr and AO3. But imagine
 if you had to navigate across that gap in a language you didnā€™t speak, 
using translation programs that donā€™t understand fan terminology.
This is exactly
 what the AO3 was built to deal with. We just didnā€™t get a chance to get
 the internationalization done first, so things may be bumpy for a 
while. We are all part of fandom, so letā€™s take care not to leave 
anyone out.


Just in case it isnā€™t clear to anyone? This. This right here is precisely why the AO3 doesnā€™t police content or remove things that are icky or obscene.

You can read the post hereĀ for more info, but I wanted to just add a bit about what this entails from my POV, on the Support team.Ā  Somewhere between Ā¼ to 1/3 of all our tickets last month were in Chinese (somewhere upwards of 300 out of 1200 or so), almost all from users just setting up their accounts or trying to find out how to get an invitation.Ā  A lot of the tickets are what Iā€™d characterize asĀ ā€œintroā€ tickets - they say hi, list favourite fandoms or pairings, or provide samples of fic theyā€™ve written. Although this isnā€™t necessary on AO3, this is not uncommon in Chinese fandom sites that you have to prove your credentials to get in (in fact it wasnā€™t uncommon in English-language fandom sites 15-20 years ago).Ā  We respond to all of these tickets, even the ones that just say hi.Ā  We check whether the user has managed to receive their invite or get their account sent up, and if they havenā€™t, we help them do so.Ā  This means taking every single ticket through our Chinese translation team twice, once so we make sure we understand the initial ticket, and then again to translate our reply.Ā 
This is a challenging process, although weā€™ve found ways to streamline it and can normally get a reply out pretty quickly (like within a few days).Ā  We do it because this is part of why AO3 exists in the first place - to provide a safe haven where users can post their works without worrying about censorship or sudden crackdowns on certain kinds of content.Ā  We do it because this is important, and helping these users get their accounts and be able to share their works safely is why weā€™re here.Ā  We hope that weā€™ll be able to help as many of them as possible.Ā Ā 
There have been a few (thankfully few, that Iā€™ve seen) complaints about these new AO3 users not always knowing how things work - what language to tag with, or what fandom tags to use, for instance.Ā  To this I would say:
1. Have patience and be considerate.Ā  They are coming to a new site that they arenā€™t familiar with, and using it in a language they may not be expert in, and it might take a while to learn the ropes.Ā  You can filter out works tagged in Chinese if you donā€™t want to see them.Ā  Or just scroll past.Ā Ā 
2. You can report works tagged with the wrong language or the wrong fandom to our Policy and Abuse team using the link at the bottom of any page.Ā  This will not cause the authors toĀ ā€œget in troubleā€ (a concern Iā€™ve heard before, as people are reluctant to report for these reasons).Ā  It means the Policy and Abuse team will contact them to ask them to change the language/fandom tag, and if the creator doesnā€™t, they can edit it directly.Ā 
If you remember Strikethrough or the FF.net porn ban or similar purges, please keep them in mind and consider that these users are going through something similar or potentially worse.Ā  This is why AO3 exists.Ā  We are doing our best to try and help make the transition smooth.Ā Ā 

I am a Taiwanese and Iā€™d like to put some context behind the recent influx of China based AO3 users.
China is tightening their freedom of speech in recent years after Xi has became the chairman (he even canceled the 10 years long term of service of chairman, meaning he can stay as the leader of China as long as he livesā€“he has became a dictator). 
They censor words that are deemed ā€œsensitiveā€, you canā€™t type anything to criticize the chinise government. Big social media platform wonā€™t even post the posts containing sensitive words. You donā€™t have the freedom of publish books without the books being approved by the government either.
To disguise this whole Ninety Eighty-Four nightmare, they started to pick on the easy target: the women and the minorities (China is getting more and more misogynistic as a result of the government trying to control their male population through encouraging them to control the female population through ā€œchinese tradition family valueā€ but thatā€™s another story). 
Last year, the chinese government arrested a woman who is a famous yaoi/BL novel writer named 天äø€ and sentenced her 10 years in jail for ā€œselling obscene publicationsā€ and ā€œillegal publicationā€ (sheā€™s not the only BL writer who got arrested. Meanwhile, multiple cases where men raped women only get about 2 years of jail time in China). Itā€™s a warning to anyone who want to publish anything thatā€™s ā€œnot approvedā€ by the government that they can literally ruin you.Ā  
Just recently the chinese government ā€œcontactedā€ website owners of one of their largest romance/yaoi/slash fiction sites 
ę™‰ę±Ÿ

and announced that for now on, for the sake of a Clean Society, they canā€™t write anything thatā€™s slightly ā€œobsceneā€. No sex scene, no sexual interaction, they canā€™t even write any bodily interaction below neck (Iā€™m not kidding here). 
But thatā€™s not their actual goal. They also listed other restriction such as: canā€™t write anything thatā€™s about the government, the military, the police, ā€œsensitive historyā€, ā€œrace problemsā€, which isā€¦ you basically canā€™t write anything that might be used as a tool to criticize the government (as many novels did). 
This recent development really hurt the chinese fanfic writers. They canā€™t write anything without the fear of being put on the guillotine by the government to show their control. Most of them donā€™t even think that deep politically, they just want to write slash fictions. But there are no platform safe in China, thatā€™s why the sudden influx of chinese users to AO3. 
I bet it wonā€™t be long before AO3 got banned in China, but until then, be a little bit patient to them. As much as I hate the chinese government, I pity their people. 


Iā€™m crying so loudā€¦As a Chinese, you donā€™t know how your kindness meant to us. When Iā€™m young, I read 1984, and I thought this story is so unrealistic, but now, itā€™s getting tougher and tougher for fanfic and the writer in China. Thank you ao3. Thank you for the people who care about Chinese people. (hope I didnā€™t spell anything wrong)

The OTWā€™s account on Weibo, the biggest Chinese social media site, is
 constantly fielding questions from Chinese users about how to get 
invitations, how to post, all of it. Chinese fans deeply want to learn 
how to use AO3. The difference between Lofterā€™s posting system and AO3ā€²s
 is perhaps even wider than the gulf between Tumblr and AO3. But imagine
 if you had to navigate across that gap in a language you didnā€™t speak, 
using translation programs that donā€™t understand fan terminology.
This is exactly
 what the AO3 was built to deal with. We just didnā€™t get a chance to get
 the internationalization done first, so things may be bumpy for a 
while. We are all part of fandom, so letā€™s take care not to leave 
anyone out.


Just in case it isnā€™t clear to anyone? This. This right here is precisely why the AO3 doesnā€™t police content or remove things that are icky or obscene.
