I've tried to find some way around this belief for years. It's one that's so batshit that I don't want to believe it, but yet it remains: that privileged white people and men never really reach that stage of mental development where they understand that other people are also people just like them. This is especially true of men, who seem to think that not only are they the most important people around, but that they are the only 'real' person alive. When we talk about empathy, it really cannot be understated just how low the bar can be here- I really truly believe that since certain mental stages have to be stimulated to be engaged and developed, a high amount of privileged people in this country- at intersections of race, male privilege and class, literally are cognitively stunted but since they're perfectly functional within their own frameworks of power, this can go completely unaddressed. They think they are, as people 'more driven' and more 'naturally' successful, but the truth is that the parts of their brains concerned with empathy and compassion just don't fully develop, despite lacking any idiopathic or clinical ailment. Their lack of empathy and theory of mind renders them apathetic and emotionally unintelligent, and this happens to work in a white supremacist capitalist system. I remember reading recently how neuroscientists and psychologists are just beginning to understand how mental development doesn't end ~26 so much as certain processes end and others begin- but no matter what structures develop when, they can atrophy and fail to develop fully if they arent stimulated. So what then of these people who through power and privilege were coddled away from having to develop theory of mind? What other parts of human thinking sit atrophying within them? And how do we address the fact that we have voluntarily stunted humans walking around, in positions of privilege? Source: goldhorn... 97 notes Stunted emotional white-man
