And while that is great for the bench press, pull up, or row, it's not a good cue for overhead movements.🏋️‍♀️ . The goal with overhead exercises is scapular mobility, and most notably, upward rotation. The shoulder blade should move up and around the ribcage as you press overhead. This is a big component of having full shoulder girdle ROM. . If you keep them down and back, you create a smaller space for your rotator cuff tendons to pass through and increase risk of impingememt.😣 You may also end up compensating and leaning into the low back to balance the weight overhead, which could lead to irritation there. Instead, take a look at these instructions from my good friend @fitness_iq on how to properly overhead press and save yourself some pain.⤵️⤵️⤵️ . This 3 drill routine will help you build that.😃 . It goes like this: . ☝Open up the passive joint range of motion. This drill can be done with a PVC pipe as I show here or a broomstick at home. Don't crank too far too quick. Ease in and let it open up gradually. Contract-Relax or PNF works really well here too. . ✌Get more specific to the squat position and pull the elbows under actively. In the meantime, @hartrehab showed this quick and efficient way to stretch the pecs after a heavy lift sesh. It will pair well with the Tight Pec Routine I posted a couple weeks back. . Why should you do this? Although you may feel that your pecs are "tight" after a workout, specific tightness in the pec minor can actually lead to shoulder irritation. . Imagine you have a good workout and go home to either: 👉Study (maybe on your laptop) 👉Sit on the couch - watch TV 👉Sleep (any side sleepers out there?) . ...You then go to work the next day and sit for a prolonged period of time typing and mousing away. . What all these things have in common is that your shoulders tend to be drawn into a forward-rounded position...essentially meaning that you're reinforcing a tight - shortened pec minor! NOT WHAT WE WANT!🙅 . So based off the picture above we can see that this is a pretty simple passive stretch that you can do with just the use of a foam roller. The medial border of your shoulder blade are blocked by the foam roller and you're able to get a solid stretch through the chest. ↔ Try moving your arms through an arc motion to focus on different fibers of the muscle. Lastly, make sure you're breathing deeply and slowly because the pec minor attaches to the ribs, which means breathing can impact your stretch. . Don't compress it more with your foam roller THE TRUTH ABOUT IT BAND SYNDROME The iliotibial (IT) band is a thick sheet of connective tissue on the outside of the thigh and is a common source of pain on the outer knee. . We used to think that the band got tight and rubbed over the outside of the femur, causing 🔥friction and inflammation of a bursa on the outer knee. We now know that the IT band is locked down tighter than Fort Knox and isn't moving anywhere. And that bursa doesn't even exist. . What's really going on is a compression syndrome.🗜 While there is no bursa, what is present is a fat pad with a lot of nerve endings. And when the IT band gets taught, it compresses on the fat pad, causing pain. . ❌So the last thing we want to do is add more compression by rolling on it! We used to think that the band got tight and rubbed over the outside of the femur, causing 🔥friction and inflammation of a bursa on the outer knee. We now know that the IT band is locked down tighter than Fort Knox and isn't moving anywhere. And that bursa doesn't even exist. . What's really going on is a compression syndrome.🗜 While there is no bursa, what is present is a fat pad with a lot of nerve endings.
