Once you get down to the practice-room levels, time stops completely and you could walk up the back stair and end up in 1967. The halls change at least 8 times an hour, there’s no way you’re getting back out the same way you came in. When the lights start going off at 10 the whole bottom 3 floors descend into some subsection of the fey realm. I once hid up on the balcony stage access fire-escape thing of a lower-level theater, and 3 faculty walked by under me and not a one of them noticed the hulking, wheezing asthmatic lurking above them, half dangling off a rickety metal ladder that probably wasn’t supposed to be climbed. A fellow hider friend came and found me, and we sat up there for 30 minutes listening to some distant clicking sound before we realized nobody was actually going to find us. We had no cell service, and no internet to reach anyone. We got lost trying to get back out, and once we resurfaced, everyone else was gone, the building was empty, and we just went home to eat ice cream. Nobody knew where we had disappeared to, and nobody bothered to check if we were there before leaving. For all I know, they just assumed we had been lost to the gaping maw of the HFAC basement and when they saw us at church on Sunday it was probably like they’d seen a ghost. None of us ever mentioned it again.
Basically what I’m saying is Campus Police had no hope of finding them in the first place and probably lost an officer or two if they actually conducted a real search, because nobody except Senior art majors or veteran custodians actually knows how to navigate that building and make it out in the same dimension they entered from.  Having gone to this University, and having personally played hide and seek
 in the Harris Fine Arts Center, I guarantee you that NOBODY finds hiders
 unless they, too, are familiar with the bowels of the HFAC. Once you get
 down to the practice-room levels, time stops completely and you could
 walk up the back stair and end up in 1967. The halls change at least 8
 times an hour, there's no way you're getting back out the same way you
 came in. When the lights start going off at 10 the whole bottom 3 floors
 descend into some subsection of the fey realm. I once hid up on the
 balcony stage access fire-escape thing of a lower-level theater, and 3
 faculty walked by under me and not a one of them noticed the hulking
 wheezing asthmatic lurking above them, half dangling off a rickety metal
 ladder that probably wasn't supposed to be climbed. A fellow hider friend
 came and found me, and we sat up there for 30 minutes listening to some
 distant clicking sound before we realized nobody was actually going to find
 us. We had no cell service, and no internet to reach anyone. We got lost
 trying to get back out, and once we resurfaced, everyone else was gone
 the building was empty, and we just went home to eat ice cream. Nobody
 knew where we had disappeared to, and nobody bothered to check if we
 were there before leaving. For all I know, they just assumed we had been
 lost to the gaping maw of the HFAC basement and when they saw us at
 church on Sunday it was probably like they'd seen a ghost. None of us
 ever mentioned it again.
 Basically what I'm saying is Campus Police had no hope of finding them in
 the first place and probably lost an officer or two if they actually conducted
 a real search, because nobody except Senior art majors or veteran
 custodians actually knows how to navigate that building and make it out in
 the same dimension they entered from. Not at 11pm anyway.

And so, I take her to the aisle, I show her the Santas, and the first thing out of her mouth is, “I’m not racist, but…” and I’m like, well, I can’t– I’m not in the position to decide if you are or not, but if like– if I could use context clues and infer, uh, I would say maybe that you might be. And three, we’re talking about Santa. Like– (stuttering) did we switch subjects?And so, um, I’m in like, I– the next thing that pops out of her mouth is like, “This is not right.” and I’m like, okay, I’m sorry, but this is what the picture was. And she’s like, “No. Santa is white.” And I’m like, oh no, okay. Okay. So I’m in– I’m about to tell her, I’m like, mid-sentence, like, “I’m sorry, do you want me to go call another store, do you need me to, like, write you a raincheck just in case we we get any more.” And she’s like, “This is wrong, I want them taken down.” She interrupts me, says that, and I’m like, (pause). I like, look around, and I’m like, is she talking to me? Is this, like, my own, like, personal hell? But like, of course it is.So, um, I’m like, “I can’t take these Santas down.” And she’s like, “Why not?!” And I’m like, “You either have to buy them, or take them down yourself.” And that was like, the stupidest thing I could have ever said, because– (sighs) she takes this bag, with like, Jesus’s face, like, slammed right in the middle as a design– it’s big– she takes it off her shoulder, and starts beating these black Santas! She starts beating these Santas down, they were like, falling down… and I’m like, oh my god! While I don’t like that Senator Feinstein said what she said, I think it opened the door for a great statement from Terry about WHY he didn’t fight back - since so many people respond to male victims with “oh well you’re bigger than your rapist, why didn’t you push him or her off of you? why didn’t you punch him or her? did you want it or something?” And they don’t listen. Maybe finally people will listen. </p>
<p>This shows that anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, even a tall, strong, hulking guy like Terry Crews. And I hope him coming forward with his accusations convinces other victims to realize that it being a victim isn’t something to be ashamed of and to take down their attackers, and push the justice system to FINALLY take male rape and assault seriously. <br/></p>

for those who don’t know the context, this is Terry Crews testifying about being sexually assaulted by Adam Venit during a Senate hearing about a proposed bill called the Sexual Assault Survivors Bill of Rights. While I don’t like that Senator Feinstein said what she said, I think it opened the door for a great statement from Terry about WHY he didn’t fight back - since so many people respond to male victims with “oh well you’re bigger than your rapist, why didn’t you push him or her off of you? why didn’t you punch him or her? did you want it or something?” And they don’t listen. Maybe finally people will listen. 
This shows that anyone can be a victim of sexual assault, even a tall, strong, hulking guy like Terry Crews. And I hope him coming forward with his accusations convinces other victims to realize that it being a victim isn’t something to be ashamed of and to take down their attackers, and push the justice system to FINALLY take male rape and assault seriously. 


I think she asked him the question precisely for that

I just looked at her Twitter and she stated (well, implied haha) that yes you’re right, that was indeed why she phrased her question the way she did.

 Next Tuesday we will have an "active shooter" / intruder drill at our school
 and I will hunker down behind flimsy wooden cabinet doors with my
 students
 You see, we open the cabinets and hide behind the doors so that anyone
 peering into the classrooms will not see us, and maybe think it is an empty
 room. Maybe we will be unnoticed, which just means maybe he will go to
 another classroom
 In preparation, I will remind my students tomorrow that our hallway doors
 should always be locked, so IT an intruder shows up we can just pull the
 doors closed without fiddling with keys. I have assigned students whose job
 it is to check those doors every period to make sure we don't forget
 I wil try to keep the children quiet during our drill on Tuesday. It's hard.
 They're packed in tight behind those cabinet doors, and they talk and giggle.
 Because they're children. They look like young adults, but they're children
 I will try to keep them quiet, because we hope that this will give that illusion
 of an empty classroom.I will try to keep them quiet because even though I
 know it's a drill, they do not, and they need to treat each drill like the real
 thing. They must have the procedure driven in by repetition
 Inevitably some children will be sure that it is real, and they will be terrified
 Two years ago, one boy - a big hulking kid turning into a "tough guy" - broke
 down in tears when the administrator jiggled the doorknob to our room while
 we hid behind the cabinets.

 I will sit down and process feelings of fear and panic with at least a few
 students. How do we process the panic we put them through? Every time we
 run through these drills, we violate their trust - their trust in us and their trust
 in a safe, secure world. We violate their trust in the name of safety
 Two years ago, a PE teacher wasn't informed that the intruder drill was a
 drill. He panicked, and screamed at the kids to "Shut the fuck Up!" while they
 were laughing and joking
 Who could blame him? He was terrified
 Afterward, some of the children will talk a big game. How they would jump
 on a shooter, how they would climb out a window instead of staying in a
 classroom
 How they'd be a herd
 A few of them ask if l'd do anything to save them in the event of an active
 shooter. I can't answer, because although I want to reassure them I really
 don't know, and I don't know how to express all those complicated feelings
 A few will scoff and say, "Of course Mr B wouldn't do anything. He doesn't
 like us
 And I don't know what to say to that, either, other than to go back to my
 lesson plan. I strive to be honest with my students, and the honest answer is
 that l'd do all I can I hope - but the human body isn't much match for
 gunpowder and lead
 At home I will replay the drill. Did we get it accomplished quickly? Tightly?
 Efficiently? Are my children safe? Will they be safe?
 Can I keep them safe?
 (No.)

 How would I ever live with it if I lost one?
 What about seventeen of them?
 Each of these kids, awful and irritating though they can be, is a magical
 world in and of themself. Four years and one hundred sixty kids in, and
 they're still all different and wonderful and fascinating. Every day, if I am very
 very careful and very very patient and very very lucky,I get to unlock just a
 little more of one of those fantastic inner worlds.
 A chunk of lead, hurtling through the air, thrown by a little explosion triggered
 by one man's finger, can destroy that entire world.
 I still don't understand why I am expected to teach my children how to
 survive in a violent world, but my country isn't expected to make the world
 less violent
 None of these questions are academic. None of these questions are distant
 or political. They are meat and blood and gristle, and they are lives lived in
 fear for so long that my children don't know anything that isn't fear.
 So I really don't give a damn how important owning a gun is to you.
