American Girl stories were the best tbh

Dude, read the books, she and her mom freed themselves in Book 1. We donā€™t disrespect American Girl in this house 


Donā€™t you dare disrespect Addy, or any of my girls for that matter. American Girl used to be legit. Good stories, good dolls, good movies. 


Felicityā€™s story was set in the beginnings of the American Revolution, and addressed the conflict that she faced when her loved ones were split between patriots and loyalists. It also covered the effects of animal abuse, and forgiving those who are unforgivable. 
Samanthaā€™s stories centered around the growth of industrial America, womenā€™s suffrage, child abuse, and corruption in places of power. Also, it emphasises how dramatically adoption into a caring family can turn a life around. 
Kitā€™s story is one of my favorites. Her family is hit hard by the Great Depression, and they begin taking in boarders and raise chickens to help make ends meet. Her books include themes of poverty, police brutality, homelessness, prejudice, and the importance of unity in difficult times. 
Mollyā€™s father, a doctor, is drafted during the Second World War. Throughout her story, friends of hers suffer the loss of their husbands, sons, and brothers overseas. Her mother leaves the traditional housewife position and works full-time to help with the war effort. They also take in an English refugee child, who learns to open up after a life of traumatic experience. 
American Girl stories have always featured the very harsh realities of America through the years. But theyā€™re always presented honestly, yet in ways that kids can understand. They just go to show that you donā€™t have to live in a perfect time to be a real American girl.

Kaya'aton'my, orĀ She Who Arranges Rocks) , the brave but careless girl from the Nez Perce tribe, or Josefina, the Mexican girl learning to be a healer.
And then there are the later dolls, that kids younger than me would have grown up with (I was just outgrowing American Girl as these came out), like Rebecca, the Jewish girl who dreams of becoming an actress in the budding film industry, orĀ 

Julie, who fights against her schoolā€™s gender policy surrounding sports in the 70s, orĀ 

Nanea, the Hawaiian girl whose father worked at Pearl Harbor.
These books, these characters, are fantastic pictures into life for girls in America throughout the years, they pull no punches with the horrors that these girls had to face in their different time periods, and in many cases I learned more history from these series than social studies at school. And thatā€™s without even mentioning the ā€œgirl of the yearā€ series where characters are created in the modern world to help girls deal with issues like friend problems, moving, or bullying. We do NOT disrespect American Girl in this house.


American Girl is probably going to be the only exposure young girls are going to get to history from a female perspective. This is actually kind of important considering that in history classes we dont really get that exposure. We dont hear about what women felt and endured during these time periods cause schools are too busy teaching us about what happened from the male perspective, which is not unimportant, but we need both. Girls need both.



These books were such a crucial part of my childhood and shaped my love of history, which still ensures today. These books can be a young girlā€™s first  lessons in diversity and cultural awareness (hopefully burying that insensitive ā€œweā€™re all Americansā€ tripe) and looking at history from more perspectives than just that taught in school. They also are an example of how women have ALWAYS been part of history, which some people would rather us not believe.
I think Kit and Kaya were the newest American Girls when I started ā€œaging outā€ of the books, but hearing about some of these kinda makes me want to revisit them!

Children being naturally exposed to a variety of germs from a very young age (from dirt, pets, playplaces, sandboxes, other kids, etc) is actually really good for the immune system and can even prevent the development of allergies. The reason food allergies are so common these days is precisely because parents are avoiding exposing their kids to possible trigger foods and not letting them get dirty (also the overuse of antibacterial soaps/hand santitizers and antibiotics!).
Source: grew up on a farm, played in the dirt and with germy animals and germy siblings/cousins/friends all the time, and very rarely took antibioticsā€¦ today Iā€™m 24, have zero allergies, and a great immune system (even my little sister is the same, and she wasnā€™t vaccinated until she was a teenager).
This is also why oldest siblings and only children tend to have more allergies in my anecdotal experience; the parents often get overprepared and donā€™t let their kid get exposed to ANY germs/allergensā€”by the time other children come along the parents are jaded enough to not care about it as much, and thus the kids afterwards are exposed to more germs from birth!
If this sounds weird and backwards, itā€™s because for a long time doctors used to teach the exact opposite. Keep your child clean and away from germs and potenial allergy triggers. Until they saw the long-term side effects of this and are now starting to tell new parents how to do it better.

Iā€™m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

Cultural appropriation isnā€™t a thing, hon. ā˜ŗļø Cultures should be shared by all means.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isnā€™t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you. 
A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect. 
And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not ā€œyellow faceā€ they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work. 
The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

Recently a museum in Boston came under a lot of fire for allowing visitors to wear aĀ ā€˜kimonoā€™ (it was featuring a painting my Monet of a girl ā€“ a white girl ā€“ in a kimono, and the museum had replicas made that guests of ANY RACE could wear to mimic the painting, Pageant-of-the-Masters style). After protests and heated debate, the museum closed the event.
I was living in Japan at the time, and out of all the *actual* Japanese people I asked, not a single one was offended by the event. Rather, they were excited that people half a world away were showing interest in their culture, and were sad that visitors could no longer enjoy the event.
This party, though somewhat silly in application, is an attempt at experiencing and appreciating another culture. The mom who put this together is not an expert on Japan, but she did her best. She got a lot of things right: there are few things Japan loves more than tea, Pocky, and sakura.Ā 
Where do you draw the line for who isĀ ā€œallowedā€ to learn about Japan? If the girl were of Japanese descent, would that make it ok (even though her citizenship would be the same as the girl from the photo)? If one of the girlā€™s parents were from Japan, then would it be ok?Ā 
Are you only allowed to make pizza if you live in Italy? If youā€™re an Italian immigrant? How do we decide these things??
You canā€™t say you want to dismantle racism and then in the next breath make rules ā€“ based on race ā€“ for who people can wear, try, or eat, especially when the intent is obviously to have fun experiencing a culture (as opposed to having fun by making fun of a race or culture, like blackface does).Ā 
When you tell people they can only experience things ā€˜meant for their raceā€™, it totally smacks of segregation to me and I canā€™t stand it. As someone who (obviously) loves Japan, I say let people learn about it, let people experience it, let people appreciate it. You donā€™t have to know every single thing about a culture to enjoy it.

well this isnā€™t necessarily a bad point. there are games with great stories and really awful shoehorned fighting sequences. then you also have handicapped/disabled gamers who donā€™t necessarily have the dexterity to finish a game but would still like to be able to.
optionalĀ ā€œcakewalkā€ modes arenā€™t that bad of an idea.

what if i want to just see the story of the game and dont want to actually play it? like??
as it is i would never pay for a bioshock game or a fallout game but i am very interested in the story. so i just watch youtube videos of it. they could get money from me if they sold the skip combat mode

iā€™m a games developer and an avid gamer and i really really think games should let you skip combat

honestly one of my favourite things about la noire was when you failed a sequence twice the game was like ā€œyo do you just wanna skip this bit?ā€the gaming industry/community has a huge problem with accessibility tbh. like, thank god for standardised control schemes (although bring back full customisation jfc  not enough games have that anymore) but fights require time, literacy in both that type of gaming & in the individual game, you need to be able to navigate the system which can be anywhere from slightly difficult to hellish for people with visual/audio processing disorders. and tbh sometimes you just wanna enjoy the story and not get stressed the hell out doing the sAME FIGHT 700 times. itā€™s why i always put a game on easy/casual when Iā€™m replaying unless  iā€™m specifically going for difficulty based achievements.not to mention SO MANY GAMES have either poorly designed battles or fights that have been shoved in for no reason other than to pad out the game (dxhr & da2 come to mind immediately) that sometimes itā€™d honestly improve the gameplay to just skip them altogether

Imagine if you were a gamer with arthritis or MS or some other disability that took away your ability to click buttons quickly, and every fight became as frustrating as THAT GODDAMN DA: ORIGINS OH FUCK Iā€™M ON FIRE SLIDE PUZZLE.Ā 
Yeah. Skipping combat might seem like a not bad idea then.

Mass Effect 3 has this:

The thing about video games (particularly RPGs or in general games that allow you to explore or direct the story) is that the interactivity is what makes it different from movies or watching LPs on youtube. And Iā€™ve played games that got FAR stronger emotional reactions out of me simply because I had to carry out the actions myself rather than just watching. And that experience should be more accessible.
Because SHOCKINGLY: games arenā€™t always about winning, or being good at it. Itā€™s about having fun. This is kindergarten education here.

Yeah, it always baffles me when I see people react so negatively to a perfectly reasonable suggestion like this.
Why the hell shouldnā€™t games let you skip combat if you want to? Why shouldnā€™t there be a super-duper-easy-peasy mode for everything? No-one is gonna force YOU to play it like that if you donā€™t want to! Continue to be as hardcore as you like!
I just donā€™t understand the resistance at all. What weā€™re talking about is simply having more options for gamers. Youā€™re adding something that would make games more accessible and fun for loads of new fans, and youā€™re not taking ANYTHING away from existing fans.
Likeā€¦do youā€¦not want more people to enjoy these games?? Do you really hate the idea of other people having fun so much that youā€™ll rile against it even when it literally has no effect on you or your experience whatsoever?? Are you honestly that selfish??

I am *horrifically* bad at gaming, but itā€™s a genre that Iā€™m intensely interested in and very desperately want to be more immersed in. I would HAPPILY buy so many more games if combat was a skippable option.Ā 

Not to mention one of the best indie games out right now is pretty much telling you if you want the best ending, donā€™t fight.



Yeah, I hate the elitist mentality that only those ~*~*hardcore*~*~ enough should be allowed to enjoy video games. I mean, gaming should be an experience to be had and not just an obstacle to clear, right?Then again, my poor mental health situation and chronic pain+mobility issues on my right hand means that my gaming options are severely limited nowadays. So Iā€™m all about making gaming accessible for everyone in the first place.Anyone who thinks gaming will be ruined by making it more accessible need to realize that they have already ruined gaming for many.

Iā€™ve had to stop playing certain games because all the button mashing aggravated my carpal tunnel pain, and I rage quit some because they had a super frustrating part that I could never get past. Games should be fun, not a test of endurance. At least, they should let you skip the difficult parts you are unable to do. They can still have a hardcore mode for people who enjoy a challenge. They would still get to brag about their accomplishments without preventing others from enjoying an otherwise fun game.



Unpopular opinion but just watch the game on youtube then? Why spend money when you donā€™t get the full experience?

Understandable but why waste money on a 70 bucks game if you cut out like 30 or 40 percent? Thatā€™s not worth it

Isnā€™t the whole point of AC to avoid fighting? Or did that change since Brotherhood? 


Syndicate is based on victorian era & thereā€™s gangsI literally had to hide because I keep walking to area higher than my current level because of main story line

well this isnā€™t necessarily a bad point. there are games with great stories and really awful shoehorned fighting sequences. then you also have handicapped/disabled gamers who donā€™t necessarily have the dexterity to finish a game but would still like to be able to.
optionalĀ ā€œcakewalkā€ modes arenā€™t that bad of an idea.

what if i want to just see the story of the game and dont want to actually play it? like??
as it is i would never pay for a bioshock game or a fallout game but i am very interested in the story. so i just watch youtube videos of it. they could get money from me if they sold the skip combat mode

iā€™m a games developer and an avid gamer and i really really think games should let you skip combat

honestly one of my favourite things about la noire was when you failed a sequence twice the game was like ā€œyo do you just wanna skip this bit?ā€the gaming industry/community has a huge problem with accessibility tbh. like, thank god for standardised control schemes (although bring back full customisation jfc  not enough games have that anymore) but fights require time, literacy in both that type of gaming & in the individual game, you need to be able to navigate the system which can be anywhere from slightly difficult to hellish for people with visual/audio processing disorders. and tbh sometimes you just wanna enjoy the story and not get stressed the hell out doing the sAME FIGHT 700 times. itā€™s why i always put a game on easy/casual when Iā€™m replaying unless  iā€™m specifically going for difficulty based achievements.not to mention SO MANY GAMES have either poorly designed battles or fights that have been shoved in for no reason other than to pad out the game (dxhr & da2 come to mind immediately) that sometimes itā€™d honestly improve the gameplay to just skip them altogether

Imagine if you were a gamer with arthritis or MS or some other disability that took away your ability to click buttons quickly, and every fight became as frustrating as THAT GODDAMN DA: ORIGINS OH FUCK Iā€™M ON FIRE SLIDE PUZZLE.Ā

And that experience should be more accessible.
Because SHOCKINGLY: games arenā€™t always about winning, or being good at it. Itā€™s about having fun. This is kindergarten education here.

Why the hell shouldnā€™t games let you skip combat if you want to? Why shouldnā€™t there be a super-duper-easy-peasy mode for everything? No-one is gonna force YOU to play it like that if you donā€™t want to! Continue to be as hardcore as you like!
I just donā€™t understand the resistance at all. What weā€™re talking about is simply having more options for gamers. Youā€™re adding something that would make games more accessible and fun for loads of new fans, and youā€™re not taking ANYTHING away from existing fans.
Likeā€¦do youā€¦not want more people to enjoy these games?? Do you really hate the idea of other people having fun so much that youā€™ll rile against it even when it literally has no effect on you or your experience whatsoever?? Are you honestly that selfish??

I am *horrifically* bad at gaming, but itā€™s a genre that Iā€™m intensely interested in and very desperately want to be more immersed in. I would HAPPILY buy so many more games if combat was a skippable option.Ā 

Not to mention one of the best indie games out right now is pretty much telling you if you want the best ending, donā€™t fight.



Yeah, I hate the elitist mentality that only those ~*~*hardcore*~*~ enough should be allowed to enjoy video games. I mean, gaming should be an experience to be had and not just an obstacle to clear, right?Then again, my poor mental health situation and chronic pain+mobility issues on my right hand means that my gaming options are severely limited nowadays. So Iā€™m all about making gaming accessible for everyone in the first place.Anyone who thinks gaming will be ruined by making it more accessible need to realize that they have already ruined gaming for many.

Iā€™ve had to stop playing certain games because all the button mashing aggravated my carpal tunnel pain, and I rage quit some because they had a super frustrating part that I could never get past. Games should be fun, not a test of endurance. At least, they should let you skip the difficult parts you are unable to do. They can still have a hardcore mode for people who enjoy a challenge. They would still get to brag about their accomplishments without preventing others from enjoying an otherwise fun game.



Unpopular opinion but just watch the game on youtube then? Why spend money when you donā€™t get the full experience?

Prologue
 Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā My name is Eva. I had one boyfriend in high school who turned
out to be a disappointment. After breaking up with him, he kept sending me
creepy messages on social media. I did what any girl would doā€”I blocked him. 
 Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā I am anxious for another romantic
experience with a different outcome. I thought college would be my chance, but
this pandemic swooped in and fucked everything up.
My ideal is a cute guy who is sensitive and provides me with
unconditional love. I want to have deep conversations with him too. 
Physical appearance isnā€™t my greatest asset: I am not ugly,
but not gorgeous. Sometimes guys at parties tell me that Iā€™m charming and a
good listener though. I would much rather be kissed than told these things, but
Iā€™ve learned to work with what I have.
I must admit, Iā€™m hard on myself. My roommate Emma has a lot
of hookups and I always feel below her. She still complains about the absence
of dateable guys which makes me feel better about my lack of success. 
I should mention my parents because I am going to be stuck
with them for a while. They are strange as fuck. My dad is a classic nerd and my
mother was wild in college. Iā€™m pretty sure that she did cocaine at a party in
college once. I honestly couldnā€™t tell you how they ended up together.
I have no idea what to expect from this quarantine. Iā€™m going
to try to be productive and stay positive. Maybe, something good will come out
of this. Iā€™ve already improved my personal hygieneā€”itā€™s hard to stay super
hygienic in college. Iā€™ve been eating a lot healthier too since college
cafeterias are no longer part of my daily routine. 
I also have a good excuse for being single. Iā€™m going to take
this time to find out more about myself. Maybe a boyfriend isnā€™t what I need
right now. 
Although, if a cute guy were to enter my life right now, I am
