Evening Gothamites! In our session "The ABC's of The Joker" we discussed Paul Dini's origin story for Joker's sidekick Harley Quinn, "Mad Love". This tale was created for the end of 'The New Batman Adventures' television series, airing January 11th, 1999. As Joker becomes flustered with trying to figure out the perfect way to kill the Batman, Harley's flirtations and simple suggestions anger him to the point he kicks her out of his hideout. Harley then thinks back on how she came to this point; before she was Joker's sidekick, she was the new psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, Dr. Harleen Quinzel, whose first patient was the Joker. After telling stories of childhood abuse, trips to the circus and other tales 'opening up' to his therapist, Harleen eventually came to the conclusion that Joker wasn't the madman everyone has dubbed him to be, but a tortured and misunderstood individual who was always put down by Batman. She wanted to help, but instead with a mask, costume, prank toys all tied up in a red and black bow called Harley Quinn, busting Joker out of Arkham. Returning to the present, Harley decides to capture the Batman herself and get rid of him for good so she and Joker can live happily ever after. But after talking to Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy), Harley (voiced by Arleen Sorkin) discovers those 'memories' Joker told her were just lies to fool her into trusting him, only caring about himself, never her. The end brings perhaps Batman's greatest escape art to the forefront, a hand to hand combat with Joker on a train and a heart broken Harley. Escorted back to Arkham, Harley tells herself 'never again. No more obsession, no more craziness, no more Joker. I finally see that slime for what he is: a murderous, manipulative, irredeemable...' and as she sees a get well soon card from 'J', she calls him angel. 'Mad Love' expands upon not only Harley's origin but also her relationship with Joker; however complex, abusive or manipulative, in the end its quite genuine how much of a mad love these two characters have for one another. Thanks for following and we'll have more History of the Batman soon! ✌🏼❤️🖤♦️🃏📺
